Description
Whee...I finally finished it!Here is my half of an art trade with , wherein she wished for a Zelgadis in modern clothes, in an autumn setting. ^_^ I have always thought ponds and lakes to be very relaxing and a good place to think, and I have a feeling that a modern Zel would frequent the local parks or ponds for some quality alone time.
Leaf boats are cathartic, I tell you.
This picture was a lot of fun to do, not only because I got to paint my favorite Slayers character, but I also got the chance to use a lot of different tools and brushes. And may I say...the Seurat brush works wonders for background trees. *grin*
Sorry it took me so long, Eugene, I hope you like it! Thank you SO MUCH again for my sword practicing Zel picture! ^_^
FULL-VIEW IS RECOMMENDED! ^_^ I am sorry about the size of it, but I wanted to show details and brushstrokes.

Very nice! I just love how you were able to draw the trees. I find that trees can be hard to draw at times. ^_^

*grin* Thank you! Trees are much easier to render when they're background trees, believe me. Distant leaves can easily be simplified into multicolored dots...merely making them a suggestion of trees, instead of going through the trouble to draw each leaf. ^^ Me drawing trees close-up is an entirely different thing. I don't have much patience, so I'm a complete baby when I have to draw lots of individual leaves. ^__~
Thank you muchly for your comment, I appreciate it!

Heehee, I'm very glad you like it, I had fun with this one. I rarely get to draw stone-boy in modern outfits, so I jumped at the chance to do it, and do it thoroughly. ^__~
Mmm...I wonder what all he has under that coat...*cackles evilly*

lol What an interesting thought. I, too, wonder what he has under that coat. *smirks* Even so, he still looks yummy enough with it. lol And I still can't believe you did all those trees and the water yourself and it isn't any photo manipulation. O_o They look so REAL.
Oh, hey, did you know that TokyoPop is publishing the Slayers novels now? I dunno how much they tweaked the translation between the original Japanese and the "American" version, but I have to say it's uber hilarious. It's quite an interesting look into the mind of Lina Inverse, since it's written from her point of view and all. lol The first book covers pretty much of the entire first series. Probably the second book will cover most of Next, although that one isn't published yet.

I got so lucky on the water, you have no idea. *laughs* Even though I had something to study from...studying and applying are two very different things, as we all know. ^^ I'm just glad I managed to make it believable.
Thank you so much for your comment, and your fav!

This is marvelous, incredible, and absolutely amazing!!! I'm speechless...This is surely the top of my favorite! Far better than my expectation, though I knew that you're wonderful artist. It's incredible to draw the background with burshes, not photo modification. #@.@# Oh I love everything in this pic(sob)....Zel's modern costume, Zel himself, his pose, the mood....(sigh) This is like a realistic dream. I'd like to touch his back of neck or a leg in Jeans...###>w< ### !!!! I must make a desktop picture with this, definitely! Thank you very much Zanne!

#O____o# *blushes so hard she's ready to pass out* I am SO glad you like my version of your request, and all your praise is going to give me a big head! *laughs*
I don't get many requests to draw Zel in modern clothes, so I wanted to make sure this picture was special. ^_^ That, and I wanted the challenge to do everything by hand, instead of photo manipulation.
I'm happy you like this version of Zel...I wanted to make sure he looked at home in his modern environment, but at the same time, retain that same personality and presence that we all know Zel to have. ^_^
Heehee...I love leather coats...I bet Zel is nice and warm, having been in the sun for a while. *sneaks up to hug him*
You are VERY welcome, Eugene! I would happily art-trade with you any time!

Oh.. my...lord... The tree's are the most beautiful things I've ever seen.. At first glance I thought the was mostly photo manipulated. o_o
I mean, check out that water! Very impressive - and so much detail in the trees and grasses. Even Zel looks real, especially as his posture seems so, whatever the opposite to stiff is, so relaxed and natural. His face I also really like, the expression, definately the eyes - and the hair. Oh screw it, everything about this picture makes me frazzle with envy. I love the quality of your work. This is a fav. ^_^

Zanne In reply to PurpleRat [2004-10-09 22:32:12 +0000 UTC]
Hehehehe...you're not the first person to have thought that. ^^ Few people know that I used to paint landscapes regularly in my college days. With my subsequent shifting in styles here on DA, I feel I can go back to some of that without it looking strange. I think I've managed to find a happy medium at last...satisfying both my anime and my impressionistic obsessions. *grin*
I was very happy with how well Zel came out. Along with being able to study the water, going to the duckpond also meant I had a good opportunity to study lots of human models too. ^_^ As people know, I have a hard time with anatomy, and being able to directly reference from the real thing makes me a happy Zanne.
Thank you so much for your praise; I am glad you like my end product. ^_____^ It was a challenge, and a blast to make.

You have outdone yourself, lady! This is simply gorgeous! The level of detail is amazing! I really like how Zel's clothing turned out; you have got such an eye for detail! There's that word again. I mean it, though: The highlights on his jacket and jeans and shoes; the way his hand lays across his knee (and you say you can't draw hands, pshaw). His shoes are amazing. And his jacket; I didn't realize it was supposed to be a leather coat when you first showed me this pic.
I know you were worried about Zel getting lost in a mass of detail, but I don't think that happened at all. I think that the whole thing works together to form a wonderfully cohesive picture that captures a very intimate moment. It's quiet and insightful and a little whimsical all at the same time.
Great job.

*blushes and bows* Thank you SO much for all your support and help with this pic...without you, it wouldn't be the same. ^__^
Heh, details will be the death of me, I'm sure. One day I'll be found dead on the floor, stylus in hand, and on my forehead the big bold words..."DETAIL WHORE." *laughs*
I'm glad you like Zel's clothes...I actually took a friend's coat and studied it...taking it outside and looking at how the light fell on it. Same thing with the boots. I held one in my hand while I was drawing it. *laughs* Yup! The coat was supposed to be a suede-y looking coat, but I don't think I quite pulled that off. Ah well.
*nodnod* I crossed my fingers and hoped that I had enough emphasis on Zel to be able to get away with all the business in the background...I'm glad you think it was successful! *dance*
Thank you SO much for your fantastic comment, and all your help.

Thank you very much! The scribbly, chicken-scratchy style is one way to tell if a piece is mine or not, I think. *laughs* Though I'm not sure whether or not my style is due to an innate sense of wanting to texture my linework, or if it's just laziness. ^__~

*laughs* Thank you, lady! Scary that I actually can do backgrounds to a point, when given the impulse to do so. ^^ Plus, it always helps if I have inspiration and a ready source of references, which in this case, I did. ^^
I'm glad I managed to pull off the mood I was searching for...I was afraid that Zel would look too melancholy, but I think he looks more thoughtful than anything else. ^_^
Heh, those reflections were a result of studying the nearby duck pond for a couple of hours with a small pile of pebbles, and sketching how the ripples affected the overall colors of the water, and how it affected the trees reflections as well. I learned a lot, and it's given me more courage to try more water-based pics. ^^
I don't have nearly the patience people think I have, believe me.

*giggle* Thank you! I really have had a technique reversing as of late...this impressionistic, quasi-realist style, harkens back from my art student days. Oil and acrylic painting was my area of concentration, and I hadn't realized how much I missed it until a few art postings ago. ^^
