Description Remember that I've been doing this for 5 years or so. If it takes you 4 years to master this, you'll still be faster than me.

I know some people don't dig pregnant women. Pardon the mind-scar if you're one of them. It works well here because the 'roundness' is an indicator of lighting direction. Plus this was my best-shaded picture at the time, and lot of people were wondering how I did it, and I just didn't feel like doing a new picture for the sake of tutorial.

I'll admit with so many pregnant women on Deviantart drawn expressly for the fetishism behind their condition, it's hard for me to look at a lot of them in artwork anymore and not go, "Oh, geeze." Because a pregnant woman on Deviantart is often not -just- a pregnant woman anymore. She's there for a totally different reason. But I'm letting this one slide without using that kind of judgement because of the shading method you used. I'm going to try it out because the skin just has this painterly feel about it that I'm trying to capture in my own portraits. It looks very realistic, but stylized at the same time. I -love- it. The only issue I might have is that it's hard to keep my base colors on the same layer as my sketch. Usually when I do that something gets warped and it's annoying to try and fix it to where it looks nice again. Then again...it probably would help loads if I'd just learn how to use the lasso tool instead of coloring everything manually, lmao.

It's always fine to put a bunch of stuff on different layers. Sometimes if I'm not sure about a change I'm about to make, I'll put it on a new layer. Photoshop has a nice option where you can select an area, then go to Layer>new fill layer>solid color, and you'll get a paintable layer that you can change colors any time.

I'm actually on Windows now. Photoshop works on both, but this guide could still be used with other programs that have similar paint tools

I'm just going over this again, and I must say I really really like it. If I had studied this a lot in the past, I think my current style would be drastically different.

Thank you for the EXTREMELY insightful shading tut. I was looking for something close to what I do already, but more and you definately presented the answer. Great work!

And I really do like how you used a pregnant lady for the shading reference. It helps to show how skin is shaded according to it's shape; whether round or elongated.

Now that's nice to hear. I've been thinking about doing more tutorials but, for a moment, wasn't sure if anyone would look at them

You're quite welcome If you were to do anymore tutorials, I would definately look at them. If you haven done one already, maybe you could explain how you draw without a guide or lineart...

yup

Maybe I'll take screenshots of my progress on the next picture, then make a video from it and explain stuff. Easier that way. My methods are really strange - sometimes I start with several reference pictures, manipulating them together in photoshop or outlining parts to get a shape; sometimes I start with a few colors; sometimes I start with a messy outline or skeleton that I mold into a complete figure (which I did with the picture above). Think I'll just explain the pictures one by one

MAFFia-WAFFLes In reply to Zareste [2008-09-03 03:18:53 +0000 UTC]

that's your best bet i assume. Yeah, i think the skeleton frame on might be the easiest to explain since it give the audience a concrete example of what to do. ypu. but it's your choice. good luck withit and all

you are god of shading now. thanks for help.

why is everyone so bothered with this? it's a pregnant lady. it's how they were born.

Glad to help. I'll talk more about hair and object shading if I do another tutorial - guess I just concentrated on skin shading in this one.

Wow... this is pretty damn detailed, man. I'm completely new to photoshop, and I don't use it for drawings, but still this was awesome. Thanks for making this, it's answered a few questions I didn't even know I had.

Oh, and to counter all the other weirdos... I'd take her out to an all-you-can-eat buffet in a heartbeat. ^^ She'd be a lovely girlfriend.
