Description
Some wondered about Gaster's metaphorical bonecage and how and when that started, and to an extent he's always put up walls between himself and others, he can't help it. Emotional intimacy is terrifying and embarrassing! But before the project got under way, Asgore and Toriel could wave their way past those walls without too much trouble. After it began he started shutting people out a lot harder and more actively and the whole mindscape sort of changed.He probably feels the most comfortable being healed by Alphys, actually. Back when he could heal , he was okay at healing her in return, but he was never a great healer by any means.

Like in the opposite side, where Alphys reaches through to him, Gaster was returning the favor for her! She mentions in other comics that sleeping in warm sand is normal for lizards babbu’s, so, maybe it’s a place of refuge or comfort for her. Even if it’s not “sand” persay, wellll, Gaster was still lending her a hand.

Mmm, I thought both happened simultaneously, like the dark part is happening in physical world and cagey part is going on on soul level, but your interpretation of it being two events compared makes quite a sense.

Hum. Well, alrighty then. Everything in black-and-white is happening a. . . Void almost, where the SOULS are, which is why they’re often brought up when healing is involved and such. There are mental barriers and colorful emotions (as we see with Gaster a few times) and stuff like that. Other people can enter close to one another, usually with healing magic, and thusly the two inter each with whatever barriers are in place or otherwise in the void-realm of souls and mind.
All kinda. . . How I think of it all smushed together but eh. Hopefully it makes sense.

If I misunderstood your coment, sorry... His theory was, that his ability to heal decreased with increse of his ability to hurt and kill. But I would not put it after possibility, that his psychological troubles negatively influenced his abilities as well.
