Description
Some wondered about Gaster's metaphorical bonecage and how and when that started, and to an extent he's always put up walls between himself and others, he can't help it. Emotional intimacy is terrifying and embarrassing! But before the project got under way, Asgore and Toriel could wave their way past those walls without too much trouble. After it began he started shutting people out a lot harder and more actively and the whole mindscape sort of changed. He probably feels the most comfortable being healed by Alphys, actually. Back when he could heal , he was okay at healing her in return, but he was never a great healer by any means.

Asgore, Alphys, Gaster (c) Undertale: I wouldn't read too much into what they're wearing in the little shadowplays in this instance, I was tired

Even though he says he was too tired to intend any connections; the way Gaster has his hands on his sides with the hood in the back totally resembles Sans, and if I were to look too far into it: I'd say it's foreshadowing Sans surrounding himself with his attacks as his only means of defense against peeps like Chara, and we could go even deeper by suggesting Papyrus is to Sans what Alphys is to Gaster; that 1 person they feel comfortable opening up to.
Ofc that's all *if* anyone were to look too deeply into it. I'll let you know if I see anyone like that.

So beautiful and illustrative of their relationships <3 Asgore (and presumably Toriel) just blows passed all those barriers and picks the poor bone baby up off the ground, whether he wants it or not. Alphys doesn't quite have that level of authority or intimacy with him to kick the door down, but Gaster is also a little more responsive to the more respectful gesture, so he reaches out in return to close the gap. Not that there's anything WRONG with kicking down the door sometimes, lord knows I've needed that from parents and friends many times in my life. But that's just the basket case that Gaster is.
The 3 panels with the darkness that becomes Gaster picking up Alphys are very interesting to me. Given what's known about her insecurities and moods, I'm reading that as Alphys stuck in a sort of mental funk (which I'm reading as depression, but maybe I'm just projecting right now), and Gaster drains away that funk and pulls her away. Again maybe I'm reading a bit too much into it, but I can see Alphys' injuries manifesting that way in that mental dreamscape.

I see that, too, with Alphys a little. I wonder if he was like this before the war, or if the battle against the humans was too much.

I'm guessing column A with a good deal from column B. I think he was pretty emotionally constipated to begin with, but had the war not occurred but the Dreemurrs were able to still enter his life somehow (or some force to force him to engage emotionally with the world), he could have been reformed into a relatively healthy skeleton nerd. Since the war did happen, I believe that's what cemented his emotional problems into adulthood. And Asriel dying and Toriel leaving was really the final straw that pushed him into making choices like tearing his soul to pieces in order to make clone children, and choosing to torture those children because that's the only way things will get better for anyone.

If it wasn't for the war, he probably had his family to help him go through this problem.

The shadowy figures remind me of Limbo so much, this is extremely amazing, and the representation of Alphy's own despair and depression and how she falls deeper into that hole and needs someone to help her up is incredible. I still wonder what kind of parents this skelekid had in order to be so secretive D=.
