Still thinking about this DUMB AU but anyway, once their chains attach for the first time, there’s always at least one connected between them so they can’t get away from each other. But the configuration can change! Sometimes if they hold a chain close enough to another, it’ll switch over - for example, if their hand chains were attached, if one of them held their hand by the other’s foot, it might switch over to that. But it’s random, they can’t control it. It tends to favor whatever configuration will make both of them the most upset lol
