Description
Synthetic by The Midnight reminded me of Gaster for a while, in particular these lines:I'm still alive but I can't feel
I got stuff inside but it's not real
They say I'm fine but I feel synthetic
Nothing human left in me
I'm just a machine full of moving parts
I got emptiness where I used to have a heart
I'm still breathing but I'm synthetic
Nothing human left in me
Nothing human about me
But I only got a clear mental picture for it recently, haha.

Everyone else: i feel so bad for him
Me: all of it is his own fault. He tortured two of my favorite fictional characters and still has almost the entire handplates fanbase love him. I dont feel bad for him AT ALL. His punishment is fitting. I always said that he deserved worse than death. He got it.

Late reply is late but here it is.
The reason why many people (including me) feel bad for him, is BC in game, Gaster is not given a proper back story aside from that he fell into his "own creation" whatever it may be and that he was the Royal Scientist before Alphys. And heck we don't see him that often . (remember there is a .1 percent or less chance of seeing him in game) So when someone makes a back story for him, or story associated with him, then we legitimately feel bad for him. Even if he was the villain or hero of the whole thing, and believe me, he could have done a WHOLE heck of a lot worse than torture them. He could have tortured them until they DIED. (Watch a Game Theory vid to understand that, it is more mature than others.) But he kept them alive and he did those tests to get the monsters free. He was, unfortunately, (in my opinion) slightly depressed. He felt like he did not deserve anybody's help, despite needing it. Now, I am NOT saying that what he did was right. He did so much to torture them that if this was in real life, he would have definitely gone to prison. And, possibly deserved death, yes I said it. In real life he deserved death. And most, if not all of us, can relate to Gaster in some way. Like being a book nerd, being a scientist, "speaking" two languages or knowing how to translate two languages, etc.
But despite that, he has become one of our favorite characters. Don't get the idea that your opinion is bad, its not. I'm just stating my opinion on why a lot of ppl feel bad for him. And long comment is long so this is where on stopping this. Have a good day.

I think the reason that some of us sympathize with Gaster is because we see that there is just a little bit of him (or the potential to become like him) inside of all of us. And a few comics back, Sans saw that in himself. That does not is any way make it okay. In many ways, that makes Gaster's character more frightening because it doesn't take someone evil to the core from birth who doesn't have a conscience to go terrible things. Gaster was so close to choosing mercy, and look at his conversation with Papyrus and how his behavior started to change. Gaster is three persons. His most of his actions and choices are the evil and hardness in humanity. This we can see in his twisted "experiments." His usual demeanor, withdrawn, cynical, logical, and emotionless is a coping mechanism for dealing with the first person, and is something we can see reflected occasionally in Sans. But deep inside, his soul is a miserable, tormented creature, beaten and bleeding nearly to death. This person is capable of love, and has slight victories occasionally, but had been tortured and silenced so often by the other two people that he is all but dead. This is where Papyrus comes from.

I've actually asked myself this question a lot "Why do we like jerks in fiction but not irl?" (Tropes will call this Jerkass Dissonance) and ultimately it IS cognitive dissonance.
Β
Seeing a bit of him inside us can be one reason as to why people may like Gaster, but I think the biggest reason is that the main difference between fiction and real life is that in fiction, we can learn about the character at a safe distance. (obviously, being magical skeletons also makes fiction different from reality, but imagine if we made their situation a bit more realistic without the magic and only used their names? People may believe it could be a real story, ya'know?)
Β
In any case, knowing someone REALLY makes it easy to empathize with them. The scariest thing about strangers is we don't know them. We don't know what their intentions are. We can't see what is in their mind or hearts. But in fiction, we kind of *have* to know who the characters are. Most stories revolve around characters as is. But the best part is that in fiction, we don't have to risk ourselves to get to know these characters. No one does.
Another example of this dissonance can be like having a best friend. You'd *know* your best friend, so you trust them, and I bet if any of our best friends did something horrible, we'd try our best to defend/justify them as well. (this is a big reason as to why people often justify their friends for sexuall assaulting someone as an example.)
We also like to be right about ourselves in the people we like. Like when we choose our friends, we all like to think we made a good choice, that our friend is cool, nice, etc etc. When that gets challenged, it really bothers us. The same can easily be applied to liking characters.
Β
In conclusion: this ability that we have in humanizing and empathizing with very scary and dangerous people is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it lets us understand and give chances. A curse because it can blind us from the harsh reality of what they are doing/have done that hurt others.
PS. Sorry for the long post! Your comment just got me thinking.

Listen, let people feel bad for him if they want. If you don't, whoopee congrats, you want a prize. The reason people feel bad for him is that Gaster hates himself in this comic. He already thought of himself as a bad person. He didn't want to be helped by anyone, did you not see those pages where it showed him inside that box like structure and it's like he wants to be helped but he doesn't deserve it. And it shows that if Sans hadn't pushed him into the CORE, then Gaster would've committed Suicide. He was going to kill himself. And It also shows how after that talk he had with Papyrus, that he was changing a bit, he wasn't hurting the Skeleton bros and he was being dare I say nicer to them. So, seriously if people want to feel bad for him, they have very good reasons too

It's a weird thing, that we feel bad for someone like this. If this was real, I wouldn't feel bad for Gaster, I would be happy that he get's what he deserves. But maybe that's the point? That my brain can differ between real and not real, and just take the things I like about Gaster and (kind of) ignore the things I don't like. And thus, feel bad for him in situations like this. I don't know.
Then again, I may just be weird too. That's totally a possibility. Β

I agree, but it still kinda shocked me when he fell into the core. When he wasn't in the lab with Sans and Papyrus (I wonder when they'll be named? Obviously Asgore will lol) But yeah, even if we knew NOTHING about any of the characters, his punishment would be fitting. You don't tortureΒ children who haven't even seen other people! And if it was for "scientific purposes," just give them an anestheticΒ ya dum dum
Long reply is LONG XD

Man for some reason seeing stuff through the hand holes makes it a lot more visceral to me. I guess because my mind imagines being pierced there, and then imagines any amount of weight or pressure there, and aaah it just does not seem pleasant.
I really like the idea of those "inner turmoil" colors coming straight out of his SOUL. Like it makes sense because if there's any "place" that hypothetical space would exist, it would be in the SOUL. This really makes me think of those scenes in a new light. It really is just right on the surface, begging to come out at any moment.
