Has anyone ever read a manga called Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle? There's a scene in it that that dream reminded me of. The plot is that a boy named Syaoran and two others are travelling dimensions to restore the memories of a girl Syaoran loves, named Sakura. But they all paid a price to gain the power to travel worlds, and the one Syaoran paid was his relationship with Sakura.
And when we finally see what that means, we see one memory that was restored to Sakura, that used to have Syaoran in it... but where Syaoran was sitting in it was totally blank, and when in the memory Sakura says his name I think it's a black bar instead.
That scene kind of creeped me out. Like this one did.
Only this one isn't a memory, is it? It's Gaster trying to make contact... which is even creepier. And sadder. Because it's not in the past, it's something Gaster is experiencing now.
I kind of want to see Gaster's perspective, know exactly what he feels about this instead of inferring it. But only piecing it together myself from what the other characters know and experience is a really cool effect as well.
Gaster's gone. He's been erased. All that remains is echoes, and experiencing those echoes and nothing else is maddening and cool and sad and clever and just desserts.

Like, my favorite part is how the xxxholic timeline corresponds directly with the reservoir chronicle timeline and then the cardcaptor sakura timeline fits into that huge gap in the end of reservoir chronicle that wouldn't make sense if you didn't read it directly
