As I read this, I started hearing "Your Best Friend" playing really slowly in my head. It's just so...haunting. Such a seemingly normal scene, and one that I kind of WANT to be real. As much as Gaster deserved what happened to him, and as much of it was his fault, I would rather he and Asgore could have faced this together. But alas, it wouldn't be handplates if there weren't several layers of unfairness and tragedy happening at once.
So this is an answer to how Gaster is right now? Yikes. I'm making out HURT, IT HURTS, HELP ME, PLEASE, NO. Apparently being nonlinear is not a good time D: Though I'm not completely convinced this is all physical pain, and not even HIS pain. I may be completely wrong here, but my theory with this is that's Gaster's guilt and memories of hurting them manifesting in the dream, mixing with Asgore's internalized guilt in regard to the fallen humans he's killed. My reason for thinking this is they weren't talking about how Gaster was at that point, all of that HURT came out after Gaster asked about the children. And thinking about all of the children they've hurt put them on a similar "wavelength" of pain and guilt.
Anyway, geez I wonder what crazy, specialized brushes and combs Asgore must have to sort out all of that tummy fur XD And all the conditioner and shampoo he must need, oh lordy. Like bathing an extremely tall shetland pony.
Oh Papyrus. His instincts and cool when it comes to helping out people having nightmares would be sweet if it didn't also mean that means he has a LOT of experience with them :< I can definitely see why Asgore was more unsettled than comforted by him just BEING there, reassuring him like he's done it a hundred times before. Especially when he has no memory of witnessing hundreds of nightmares.

Fortunately, asgore is pacifist, because when I wake up from a nightmare, if I see a fucking skeleton looking at me with shining eyes, I return it to the surface of a kick.

I can imagine it now.....waking up from a nightmare only to find a talking fucking skeleton with a green and yellow striped sweater and glowing fucking eyes. And then that creepy little bastard says "....do you feel better? Don't worry...it's not real....it's ok....."

I think that Gaster's trying to reach out to people he knew, for reasons unknown. First the phone call with Alphys, then this little sequence... so how will he show up for Sans and Papyrus? These next installments are going to be VERY, VERY INTERESTING.

Why? He came to comfort Asgore from nightmare with a gesture which works for him (glowing). That's probably what Sans did for him someday (I don't remember if, and on which page was it shown up). He is the typical worrying about others helpful Papyrus ^^ I don't think he realizes seeing glowing eyes in darkness can scare anyone

I think that Papyrus is sleepwalking in here, not really aware of what was happening but kind of senses that Gaster was in Asgore's dream, and wanted to confort Asgore after he woke up, an by saying it's not real he could have meant the dream, and not Gaster, but since Gaster in not in their plane of existance, or in anyone memories, maybe was best not to confuse Asgore even more than he was.
