Someone sent me an ask a while back wondering why Handplates!Gaster didn't look much like the mysteryman sprite. Who knows what he got up to in the void! Presumably after watching videos of how he destroyed his own life and how much happier everyone else is without him, it'll be back to the bone breaking. Just business!
On a somewhat related note, at this point I have no plans to incorporate any Deltarune lore or info into Handplates if you're curious. The whole story's been set down for ages, trying to work in a ton of new info out of nowhere is just impossible... and Deltarune is just its own AU anyway , haha.

The mysteryman sprite might not even be Gaster.

Since the Mysteryman sprite looks like it has two faces and is kinda a melted skeleton more or less, I'd say it's an Amalgamate (of Gaster).
Also, there is that other sprite that speaks in Wingdings but doesn't look like anything.
My thought is that, rather than one of them being Gaster, they're BOTH Gaster.
One of his followers did say that he "scattered across time and space" and "I'm holding a piece of him right here".
Falling into the Core may not just have erased Gaster from everyone's memories, it may even have torn his mind, body and soul apart into several pieces.
Mysteryman may be the image of his former body, having become an Amalgam, while the white ghost thing is his mind or a representation of his soul, as well as having his speech function. Both are spectres and can't really be interacted with, if they get interacted with, Mysteryman disappears and the ghost fades in and out as you approach him or move away from him. In other words, they're not really "there", but rather visible from a different dimension.
Not sure how the talking head in one of the followers' hand fits as part of his former body though...
Anyway, that's my opinion on what happened to Gaster after he fell into his creation (because his experiments went wrong, i.e. Sans).

i suspect that delta rune is the cannon timeline before gaster was erased. somehow, he succeeded in freeing everyone (my guess is convincing asgore to kill chara, hence why gori and tori are still divorced) that's why all the followers are still alive, sans and papyrus lived in another place (where ever gaster is) alphys is not royal scientist (and by extension, why metta is still unpopular and depressed), and why undyne has both eyes (never had to fight any humans), as well as why she never met alphys (as it is implied they met as alphys was about to attempt suicide at the dump after creating the amalgamates). After Gaster is erased, the timeline is reset without him and the goners, resulting in the undertale timeline, where they all return to the underground. Sans and an infant papyrus are most likely the sole survivor. That is also why in og undertale sans makes references to "going back home" and has a group of people who he misses (as well as why mention of suzy brings the don't forget picture, a phrase which is common in delta rune). This is also why sans recognizes the sun, and chara immediately. Because he has met both before. still don't think you should incorporate it, as it is non confirmed, and directly contradicting towards your story. to anyone who cares, I will make a reddit post this week compiling my full timeline theory, and all my evidence.Β

This is super far-fetched, and Toby himself basically shot that down in the link Zarla put in the description. Besides, Gaster had little-to-nothing to do with the war that got monsters sent to the underground in the first place.

There is nothing indicating it is a precursor or prequel of any kind.
Plus, in all of the in-game events involving Gaster, it specifies that, despite him being gone, nothing different happened. His disappearance was insignificant.

For my Deltarune is just another timeline, so for me it's great that you aren't gonna mix Deltarune and Handplates. Handplates is placed in one timeline and Deltarune in other, so IMO they can't be mixed.

I suspect Deltarune is an alternate timeline where the Monsters vs Humans war never happened. It would explain why they call Kris by name instead of calling them "the human," why Undyne has both eyes, why Asriel isn't dead, why you're not Chara/Frisk, etc. And I really hope you don't get people being mad/butthurt if you decide not to link that to your own AU story. Not everything has to be connected.

The timeless void, mystery Gaster and Sans doors, and everything else leaves a lot of open room.
Delta AU Gaster may have met a similar fate and joined into one omni-AU being at some point.
