Description
Someone was asking about heights in handplates , so I decided to do some quick height comparisons. Based on their actual sprite heights!-Sans and the kid are about the same height, give or take a pixel.
-Counting her headspikes, Alphys is taller than Sans.
-Muffet is taller than all three of them. Muffet and Napstablook are the same height, actually.
-Papyrus is about a head taller than Sans. Which means he's only one head taller than the kid!
-Undyne is five pixels taller than Papyrus.
-Mettaton EX is three pixels taller than Undyne, and Mettaton EX is about the same height as Toriel if you don't count his hair poof. Papyrus would come up to Toriel's eyes.
-Asgore is five pixels taller than Toriel. So Papyrus would come up to about his nose!
Anyway I tend to resort to heads for height differences, so I roughly make Gaster a head taller than Papyrus, who's a head taller than Sans, but that'd make Gaster taller than Asgore which is too much. At the most, he'd be as tall as Toriel probably. But maybe the skelebros were shorter while they were in the lab, haha.

and wow yeah, did not realize the duo in handplates AU was really adults. Gaster wasn't kidding when he mentioned having made them not look like kids. He is just so tall I didn't notice and thought he was deep in denial about them not looking like kids lol

Does this mean the cast of undertake (ignoring the dreemur family) are all kids!?! Or just that the dreemurs are crazy tall and make people look like kids? Because Sans is the kid's height...but he's also a monster...
...and now my head cannon is that alphas and undyne are in their early 20s, and the skelebros are teenagers...

That's actually my head canon too.
I'd estimate that Sans and/or Papyrus are about 18 years old, as that is the age when someone is legally allowed to live alone.
Alphys and Undyne seem more like adults to me because Sans and Papyrus are sillier than them and they seem more serious. Toriel and Asgore are obviously adults.
Frisk's gender and age are undetermined. As Frisk is the same height as Sans, give or take a pixel, we can assume Frisk is around the age of a child or a teenager. Following this head canon, they are most likely a teenager.
Napstablook is a ghost, so I'm not sure if he can age or not. He seems like either an older teen or an adult. Mettaton is a ghost possessing a robot, so he may be an adult or teenager as well.
Muffet and Grillby are adults, as they have their own businesses.Β
Gaster is obviously an adult.
Asriel/Flowey seems about the age of Frisk. Probably a teen or a child.
Ehh...these are just some of my theories. Sorry for rambling!

I always (as in once I learned the truth) assumed that Napstablook and Mettaton were the same age, but in hind site I wouldn't be surprised to learn either is the elder...although I bet the dummy is the eldest of the three.
on the subject of Gaster, is it possible he's a boss monster? Then he could be a thousand years old and still look the same, assuming he lost a kid. If we assume that the skelebros of nameplates are mutated/altered clones of himself, then perhaps their existence is related to that missing child? I'm way in the wild mass guessing now, but it's a cool thought...
muffett doesn't strike me as an adult, though. Β The whole "by spiders, for spiders, of spiders!" Always sounded like a young teenager to me. But she's a little taller than Alphys the adult, and shorter than Papyrus the teen, so this could mean Alphys is incredibly short, papyrus is incredibly tall for his age(?), or Muffett is an adult...I don't know...
and rambling is is totally fine! This is all speculation anyway! Rambling is both expected and encouraged!

I agree with you for the Gaster thing. It's a good theory.
Muffet never struck me that much as an adult either, but it is still quite possible, given her height and the fact that she owns a business. Although, she did say that the spider bake sale was only to raise money for spiders, so it is presumably not a business, just a small fundraiser.
Papyrus' body is already taller than an average human, anyways, so it would make sense if he was tall for his age.
Alphys does seem quite short for her age, if we can assume she's an adult. She would probably need to be an adult, because herself and Undyne are a canon ship and if Undyne were an adult, it'd be kind of weird if she was dating a teenager, no? I can only assume that Alphys is an adult.

On the subject of an adult dating a teenager, it depends on the actual ages in question: a 21 year old dating a 14 year old is weird, but a 20 year old dating a 17 year old is more reasonable, and a 19 year old dating an 18 year old doesn't bat an eye.
if we assume that the monster age of adulthood hasn't changed since the monsters were forced underground, then we could argue they,re still running on the "16 is an adult" scale. Then Undyne being an adult with her own home while still dating a teen would be less conspicuous. Especially because she's probably on the rich side, given her job as head of the royal guard.Β
And all all of these guesses run on human time. It's possible the skelebros are never going to age, simply because they are skeletons. Or that Undyne will have a short (compared to frisk) lifespan. This leads to the possibility that undyne is actually YOUNGER (in human years) than Alphys, and is just an adult by fish standards.Β
To to further confuse things, they're all boss monsters ( or at least they're all monsters who are bosses [except Alphys...]), so their aging is effected by reproduction. I remember that a boss monster who's kid dies stops aging, but don't recall if a boss monster will stop aging at a certain point if they HAVENT had a kid yet...
if Gaster used himself as the base for creating the skelebros in nameplates, does that mean they're absorbing his magic as they grow? If so, did he expect this? How long does he have? Is that why he's accelerating his experiments?

That all makes a lot of sense. We don't know whether or not monsters do age the same way humans do. I think they might age the way their monster species does. [ex. Undue ages the same way a fish does, etc.]
I think the skelebros can actually grow. When they are fighting over the crossword and the word scramble, Sans says, "that's for baby bones." Meaning that they can actually grow and live. I wouldn't think that they'd take Gaster's energy, as they were not created from him but by him.
Toriel considers herself old, as she mentions that a few times when you're in the ruins. We don't know what is considered old for monster years. Perhaps in goat years herself, along with Asgore, would be considered old.
It'd make sense if Alphys was an older teen. People a really long time ago considered 15 year olds as adults because people died at such early ages. Alphys does seem more like a teenager. She likes anime a lot Β and she still hasn't found her own purpose, which are qualities that some teenagers have.
I still think Sans and Papyrus are teenagers. They act like teenagers a lot, and they are still childish. Perhaps they are around 16-19 years old.
We stil have no proper evidence for the ages of Frisk or for Chara, as they simply do not have canon ages. But we could assume they are teenagers based on Sans and Alphys' heights. If we can conclude that Sans and Alphys are teenagers, then Frisk and Chara could possibly be teenagers. Sans and Frisk are the same height, give or take a pixel. We may be able to conclude that either Alphys and Sans are short for their ages, or that Frisk and Chara are around 14-16 years old.
