Gaster that son of a......UHG!! Poor Papyrus. He never wants to hurt anything. He see's the good in everything. It must of been really hard for him seeing Sans in a situation like that. I do believe Gaster could be good though. I believe anyone can. Still, Gaster disappoints me. He made his choice to show no mercy. And yet, he's shown a bit of it. He could be a wonderful father to them but he chooses not be. He sets aside all morality ant tries to only focus on logical thinking. That's surely going to burn him out.

Good. Gaster doesn't deserve to be defended. He's made his choices, he has to live with them. No amount of reason can defend what he has done. While I don't believe him evil, and emphasize with him, I'm not going to help him out of the hole he's dug for himself. He's done his best to separate logic and morality, but it's not going to work. Personally I'm obsessed with having everything be logical despite being illogical myself, so I can't say that he's in the wrong completely without being a hypocrite, but morality and logic are related in ways. I'm not going to kill him like other crazy commenters have suggested, but I'm not ready to defend him.
Excuse my rambling. I have a bit of a tendency to rant on about subjects such as this.
You do whatever you want though. I admire your seeing the situation from multiple views.
