Gaster talks a big game about doing this for the good of all monsters and such, but a lot of his experiments are motivated by self-interest or personal curiousity.
This puts that one line from that silly comic from a while back about Papyrus glowing enough for both of them in kind of a sad light, doesn't it? As for why Sans still has a pupil in his dead eye, he can manifest one but he can't see out of it. Sort of like a glass eye.
Papyrus isn't healing him, he's just trying really hard to soothe him. He doesn't know how to heal at this point, he'll learn how to do that later .
This would be set after the escape attempt but they're not directly related to each other, really.

Aaargh, that last line! Gaster meant that he had two of them and that one was possibly dispensable. But what it REALLY turned out to mean was with two of them together, one can never be completely broken. Not while they have each other.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this (or if it's made an appearance in other comics before) but Gaster has a cup that says "NIMH" on it. Personally I think it's awesome, given that Gaster is doing such questionable science-y stuff just like in NIMH. Black Mesa, NIMH, you sure make a lot of hella rad references in these comics. I love it
