Gaster talks a big game about doing this for the good of all monsters and such, but a lot of his experiments are motivated by self-interest or personal curiousity.
This puts that one line from that silly comic from a while back about Papyrus glowing enough for both of them in kind of a sad light, doesn't it? As for why Sans still has a pupil in his dead eye, he can manifest one but he can't see out of it. Sort of like a glass eye.
Papyrus isn't healing him, he's just trying really hard to soothe him. He doesn't know how to heal at this point, he'll learn how to do that later .
This would be set after the escape attempt but they're not directly related to each other, really.

First, my view on Gaster was mitiged ; for me, he was a skeleton who doesn't have the choice, and sacrifice his morals and hapiness for the future of monsters I think. I felt sorry for him, without ignoring his bad actions toward the skelebros.
But now, he disappointed me. Use Sans like a object, and make him, not on purpose i think, lose an eye... Disgusting ! But I can't totally hate him, dunno why.
