Description There are many ways how a signal box can look like, but Maastricht's is really something impressive. The tower with it's "Post T" label always looks smaller than it really is. For size comparison, there's a dutch double-decker train, running as the InterCity from Sittard, which is even a little larger than german double-decker cars, but it still looks completely lost next to this thing.

I didn't actually spend any time in Maastricht at all, I just took a lot of pictures at the station. Normally I'd have expected some sort of huge station, but the amount of tracks actually used for passenger service is lower than in Goslar (although there are much more trains here). The rest of the area, however, with all it's storage tracks, is extremely huge.

Lucky you, there aren't many of these Post signal boxes left in Holland. In the Dutch Railway Museum, there is one wich was originally placed somewhere up north, thought in Groningen....

Well, you could always come to Maastricht, although I don't know how much of a journey that is for you.

So how many tracks are there for passenger service? I've seen places like that before, stations next to storage yards.

There are six tracks available, but only three are through tracks and actually used. Track #4, however, is split in an A and B part, and both are used at the same time. Still, not really a lot. However, the trains come very frequently.

We used to have similar signal boxes in one or other major point of our railway network... this is one such example (I haven't yet taken a better picture than that). In these days, of course, not one of them is still in use.

Sad, actually, although I have no idea whether this one here is still in use (it might have been converted to electronic operation, but I don't know).

This one was destined to be demolished (because the space it occupies is where two tracks will pass - or should be passing already...), but it was saved because it's a symbol and an architectural monument; so, the tower will be moved some 20-30 meters, to the other side of the platforms (I made a sketch with GEarth about that move, but I can't find it now ).

Moving the entire tower? Now that sounds like an interesting idea.

Indeed it is; however, I don't have the faintest idea how they're gonna pull that stunt, without damaging it too much.

Frankfurt also has an impressively large interlocking tower situated right in the middle of the station throat tracks.

Sounds interesting, I'm afraid I've never been to Frankfurt's station. Do you have any pictures of that?

Thank you for the five recent s!

You're welcome. You snapped some good pictures. I don't currently have a picture of the Frankfurt AM Hauptbahnhof interlocking tower, but I'll see about getting one in the near future. I only ride trains through there 8 times per week...

Stupid me... Here's a picture of the Frankfurt a.M. interlocking tower. It's out of service.
