I'll confess to being a shallow bastard, so most of the time I just look at pictures of nekkid girls 'cuz I like the boobies.
This image, on the other hand, has merit far beyond the presence of nipple. Which is my crude, misogynistic way of saying, "Excellent job of making an overdone subject into an artistic presentation." Seriously.

Is it a big soft box overhead? Love it. The model is just amazing and you've really shown that in your shot.
Should be framed large as a feature in an expensive loungeroom.

Nope, you cannot get these kinds of skin textures with a soft box, the light is just too diffuse.
I shot this by blasting harsh specular light directed by a silver dish. I am shooting a black model on a black background with an f22 aperture and you can see how there is still blowout points!
Shots like this have to be metered dead on, and you need to make sure the penumbra of the light is just so...

Gotcha. I've never shot a dark skinned model. I'd like to though because the lighting I'd imagine would be quite different to what I use for lighter skins. The beautiful highlights you've gotten off this model's skin I just can't get off lighter skin. My guess is that because lighter skin lets more light in, reflections are diffused slightly. That's what the 3D modeling people tell me also. They say that to model fair skins requires a different approach to darker skin.
Really a fantastic shot of a great model. Thanks for the info re lighting too. B)
