Description EDIT: When I said I used references for this piece, I was referring to references that I used for the DRAGON, to make the dragon look more real/believable. I did NOT use any references WHATSOEVER for the boy! I did not look at Maurice Sendak's work. I did not copy anybody! Copying is wrong, and I know it is. If things look similar, it's a coincidence!
-------

Dragon's thoughts: (Is it a dragon that swallowed a small child and hasn't quite managed it? Is it a child wearing a dragon skin? It smells like a child, the kind that needs a change of dung-cloth. But it doesn't look like a child, except for that space that should be the dragon's mouth. And it makes odd noises, like niether child speaking nor dragon roaring. Is it both? Niether? Does the family need protection from it? Or does it need protection from the family? Where has it come from, and when is it going back?)
-----
Yeah, I used to ADORE dragons. Dragons were the coolest thing around after I fell out of love with unicorns (which was about age 11-12). Then I fell out of love with dragons. Everyone does dragons. Telepathic dragons, noble dragons, cranky dragons, chinese dragons, etc, etc. The change happened slowly: I made up quite a few variants on dragons before I gave them up. So I guess I've taken them up again. Maybe. I think this is really just an abberition. The main thought behind it was the juxtaposition of the semi-chinese dragon with the kid in the silly dragon costume.

I looked at way too many references to come up with the dragon. If anyone wants to know where I came up with the coloring/scale pattern, I can probably find that picture again. But since everything is such a mix, I don't feel obligated to cite source.

I'm sure there's a few things wrong.

But mostly I'm please with what's right.

And yeah...everyone does dragons (even me)...it's dissapointing. I still draw dragons but I mostly just draw things with no name. I think getting back into dragons is a good thing though, but that's just me...

Granted the boy in the suit resembles drawings of "Where the Wild Things Are" but IMO any boy in any kind of "monster" costume could claim it came from that source

I think this stands apart and considering the dragon resembles nothing like the larger beasts in the aforementioned story I feel it has a greater implication of a child's imagination manifesting from mere costume to actual creature

Aww! Such a wonderful feeling of this picture! The details and color combonation feels right out of the storybook! I love asian dragons when I was a child. So, this bring back wonderful memories. For advance critiquism: Remember that the hairs of the dragon goes right on top of the spine. Because the belly is more exposed at the bottom half of the dragon, make the hairs disappeared as well.

ZeeZeeMonster In reply to Unownpowers [2007-07-26 05:04:35 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment. Er . . . the only hairs I see near his belly are the ones trailing from the dragon's elbow . . .

You were upset, with reason, by the remark of people comparing to Maurice Sendak's work.
It is stupid (the comparison!), as we can also mention the Lost Children in Disney's Peter Pan, or the little girl (Boo) in Monsters, Inc.
Actually, we can mention any child in a monster or an animal suit...
Of course, when we draw, we are influenced, conscientiously or not, by anything we have seen in our life. It is unavoidable, and even a good thing. Once digested, these influences mix up and make a unique style, your.
So, don't worry, and keep up the good work!

As I wrote in a forum thread: it is superbly made. The boy seems unaware of the dragon, he looks like being completely into his play. And you succeeded in rendering the perplexity of the dragon, which wasn't obvious.

ZeeZeeMonster In reply to philho [2007-07-03 20:34:24 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much for your comments. Yes, I was upset, but I think I've gotten over that now. The world is full of well-meaning people that make mistakes. And I know that no matter what we do, our artwork is going to remind people of something else .

I went through a dragon-phase, too. That was basically all I drew when I was about 10-12. I love the colours of the dragon, and the description about what it's thinking is funny, too.
