Description
Richard Armitage as John Thornton from BBC's "North & South." Painted freehand. An oil painting on 6x8 (approximately 15.2 x 20.3 cm) on RayMar Art board. Some double-checking and fixing up in Photoshop. Here's the WIP if you are interested:Have you ever worked on a drawing or painting for so long that you can bear it no longer? I think I'm at that stage with this painting. I did some digital fixing-up (maybe 5% changes from the original oil) because I couldn't take it any more. This painting has been a work in progress for months. I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!
More info about this painting (plus a sneak-peek at my John Porter "bondage" painting-in-progress) is at my blog: [link]
EDIT 10-16-11: I submitted this as a print, because I have no idea when I'll go back to the original painting and "finish" it. In the meantime, there is a print available for anyone who is interested. I didn't make it any larger than 9x12 because the original is 6x8 and 9x12 is as large as I think it can reasonably go without looking too funky.

Amazing job! Oil.. man... that's a lot of patience for one man! Don't think I'd ever have that much for one, even in person...! LOL

We are putting together a deviantart book of Thorin/Richard Armitage art for Richard's birthday if you are interested in showcasing a piece(s) in the book. I will be helping put it together and shipping it personally. His birthday is Aug. 22, so it will be shipped the beginning of August. The page will feature your art, name of piece, your deviant ID, your real name (if you choose), link to picture, country, and "Happy Birthday" message to RA. There is no way I can track down everyone on deviantart who has these pieces so help me to pass the word along For more info ~ read my journal and just send me a note with the details if you are interested ~ thanks

Haha, I know exactly what you mean The colours turned out really well, however, and it is a very good likeness.

Beautiful work, Zelda! I am an Armitage fan, also. I love the BBC's movie, NORTH AND SOUTH. It is one of my favorite period movies. I was so taken with trailers of it I'd watched on You Tube, that I ordered a DVD of it from Amazon for my movie library. Since viewing my DVD many times, I have drawn a graphite from one of the movie's final scenes. I titled it, "A kiss that said it all in N+S." Sadly, it does not show off Richard Armitage as well as it shows Daniela Denby-Ashe.

Even though you got to the stage of not bearing to look at it (a feeling I'm familiar with) the time you've taken on it shows, and the results are great! It might sound silly, but my favourite part is his ear; the lively brushstrokes in that area remind me of Frans Hals.

SQUEEEE! It's amazing. The colors are warm, and his half-grin/smirk is cute (for lack of a better word, "hot" seems so juvenile lol). I agree with everyone else who posted, hide it somewhere and forget about it. Until you find it one day (say, next year) and feel like working on it again.

This looks amazing. I'm in awe that it's in oil, and I think that fact adds an interesting quality, as if this could very well be a portrait up at the Thorntons' residence.

I know what you are talking about Zelda! I have to leave mine (if I can!) and come back later.....Much, much later.
But take it from me, this painting looks finished! Stunning work, as usual. I adore your oils technique.

It's the best Thornton portrait ever! Truly it is! I think if John had his own portraits gallery this one should definitely be in it. *Sigh* I'd rather have this drawing in my RA gallery...

I like it - very much! I know the feeling of working forever on a piece & really getting fed up with it. I'm currently working on a simple illustation for my Sketchbook 2012 project that just doesn't seem to want to come together. But this painting is wonderful so I'd say all your hard work paid off

Thanks, DozyDog! I'm glad the painting came together at the end. I see it waiting in my painting area, wanting to have the final touches added, and I just can't do it yet! Hopefully soon!

It's a brilliant portrait it is!
I can only wish I could capture tones as well as you do; especially with traditional tools
I particularly like the shine you applied down his pointy nose and how you handled the sideburns.
Great job!
