Description
I'm taking figure drawing classes again. Woo hoo! But the first session after a long absence is always a disappointment. My drawings all just felt "off." It'll take a while to get back into the groove.I also was not feeling the love for my paper and medium (charcoal). I pulled out some manga paper (!) and did a few sketches on it. It was better, but still frustrating. I've placed a order for more paper and Conté crayon (which I prefer over charcoal). Charcoal isn't ALL bad; I may use it in conjunction with Conté, but I am more comfy with Conté.
This drawing was among the slightly less sucky sketches that I did last night. Our model was fantastic; I only wish I could have done her justice.

Can i ask you does Conte (1710 B) smear almost like charcoal? I've seen some videos where people use something called ritmo pencil and i can't find that in my local shop, but someone on forum said that conte is similar to a ritmo pencil.
I really want one of those ritmo pencils cause on videos it looks like it has the best of both charcoal and graphite.
Also congrats on being able to draw from live models

Thanks! It's nice to be back to live models, definitely!
Conte smears less than vine charcoal, but I haven't used vine charcoal in ages. I used compressed charcoal in this recent figure sketch.
I'd say compressed charcoal smears or blends similarly to Conte, but it depends on the hardness of the charcoal and/or Conte. I haven't use Conte in a while, so am looking forward to trying it out again during the next class. I've never tried ritmo (never heard of it before!) so I can't help you there.
I definitely recommend Conte, it's got some nice colors and a nice feel to it.
