Description
Chapter Four: An unexpected JourneyThe forest glade came into focus as I floated down towards the ground, being carried by the crystal. I stared up at the tall and proud deku tree, who’s face was proud and calm.
“Well done, Link…” The Tree proclaimed. I stared up at him with a smiling face, and welcomed the sunlight shining down on my face. “Thou hast verily demonstrated thy courage… I knew that thou wouldst be able to carry out my wishes…” His face turned very serious. “Now I have yet more to tell thee, wouldst thou listen...”
I nodded and lowered my head. “Of course Great Deku Tree. I will listen to anything.” Then, I sat down in the soft grass, and paid close attention.
“Now… listen carefully… A wicked man of the desert cast this dreadful curse upon me…” I closed my eyes for a brief moment, and saw fire ravaging the land. Utter fear ran up my spine as I saw who was riding a black war horse through the fire and destruction. A tall imposing man with burning ember eyes. Like the man in my dreams…
“This evil man ceaselessly uses his vile, sorcerous powers in his search for the Sacred Realm that is connected to Hyrule…For it is in that Sacred Realm that one will find the divine relic, The Triforce, which contains the essence of the gods…” The fire and destruction disappeared, and a vision of dark clouds with precipitation falling took it’s place.
“Before time began, before spirits and life existed… Three golden goddesses descended upon the chaos that was Hyrule…Din, the goddess of power… Nayru the goddess of wisdom… and Farore, the goddess of courage… Din… with her flaming arms, she cultivated the land and created the red earth. Nayru… Poured her wisdom onto the earth and gave the spirit of law onto the world. Farore… With her rich soul, produced all life forms who would uphold the law.
“The three great goddesses, with their labors completed, departed for the heavens. Golden sacred triangles remained at the point where the goddesses left the world. Since then, the sacred triangles have become the basis of our world’s providence. And the resting place of the triangles has become the Sacred Realm…”
I slowly opened my eyes and stared up at him, taking all of the information in. He continued, “Thou must NEVER allow the desert man in black armor to lay his hands on the sacred Triforce… Thou must NEVER suffer that man, with his evil heart, to enter the Sacred Realm of legend… That evil man who cast the death curse upon me and sapped my power… because of that curse… my end is nigh…”
“What?!” I shot upright, eyes wide. “But the spider… I killed it! You should be fine now!”
“Though your valiant efforts to break the curse were successful, I was doomed before you started…”
I stood up quickly, my eyes filling to the brim with tears. “So you’re… going to… die?”
“Yes, I will pass away soon… but do not grieve for me… I have been able to tell you of these important matters... this is Hyrule’s final hope…” I opened and closed my mouth, but nothing came out. I had so many questions, but I just couldn’t ask.
“Link… go now to Hyrule Castle… There though will surely meet the Princess of Destiny…”
I sniffed, “…The Princess?”
“Take this stone with you,” he continued slowly and sadly. “The stone that the man wanted so much, that he cast the curse on me…”
Suddenly, the whole forest glade lit up with a bright green light, and in front of my face, floated a beautiful green emerald stone. I stared long and hard at the beauty, and then reached out to grab it’s smooth surface. Once I laid a hand on it, it stopped floating, and rested in my hand. The emerald was shiny, and had a golden strip curling around the middle and edges. The surface had no bumps, and it was very smooth.
“This is the Korkri’s emerald, the Spiritual Stone of the Forest. I am now entrusting it to you, Link.”
“Deku Tree please! Why me?!” The glade was silent. He finally replied,
“Why not you, young Link?”
I clenched my fists. “I… I am so small. How can I compare to someone like him? How can I do all of these things that you have asked me to do, when I can’t even reach the top shelf of my cabinet?!” I sniff again as tears finally run down my face.
“Size does not, and will never matter, young one. It is the heart of the person that will be compared. If you are willing and courageous, thou can conquer, or do anything. You are different from the rest of them, and only you can do this for me. I have faith in thee.”
I stared up at him, still unsure.
“The future depends upon thee, Link… Thou art courageous…Navi the fairy…”
She flew up in front of his face, her face full of sorrow.
“Help Link to carry out my will…” His voice was dying, and getting softer with each word.
“Of course Great Deku Tree. Anything.”
“I entreat ye… Navi… Good… bye…” Suddenly, the leaves on his branches crumbled up and fell slowly to the ground, and his enormous trunk slowly turned to a dark shade of empty gray.
“Great Deku Tree?” I asked frantically. I ran up towards his trunk, banging hard on it with my fists.
“GREAT DEKU TREE!” I cried. I threw my hands over my head, fell to the ground in front of him, and sobbed.
The Great Spirit of the forest was no more.
I clenched my fists, and glanced up at the dead tree, full of sorrow. Then I remembered what he had told me:
“Thou must NEVER allow the desert man in black armor to lay his hands on the sacred Triforce… Thou must NEVER suffer that man, with his evil heart, to enter the Sacred Realm of legend… That evil man who cast the death curse upon me and sapped my power…”
I stood up slowly, and pocketed the Korkiri’s emerald. “Don’t worry Great Deku Tree… I won’t let him get the triforce. I SWEAR… I will avenge you…”
Navi fluttered over my head, and patted it softly. “Let’s go to Hyrule Castle, Link.”
She slowly flew out of the glade, and I followed her. I glanced over my shoulder, and stared at him once last time.
“Goodbye… Great Deku Tree…”
With that, I took off running after Navi.
***********
“Not so fast!” Mido’s hand shoved against my chest, throwing me back onto the ground. I gasped as I hit the ground.
“Mido, let me pass! The Deku Tree gave me a job to do!”
He spit at my feet in disgust and scowled, “How can he give you a job if he’s dead?! What happened to him?! Why are you all torn up and bloody?! Answer my questions now!”
Mido’s freckled face suddenly lit up in realization. HE grabbed the collar of my shirt and pulled me close to his face. “You… You killed him!”
My eyes grew wide with complete and utter shock. What?!” Mido threw me to the ground almost instantly. You murderer! You must have killed him! You were the only one with him!”
I shook my head, feeling the tears come again. “No! No I swear I didn’t! There was a curse! I swear! An evil man placed a curse on him and…”
“How could you DO such a thing?! Just wait ‘til I tell everyone what you did!” Mido took off running in the opposite direction.
I got to my feet quickly and screamed, “MIDO! Come back! I didn’t kill him!”
Navi flew in front of my face and shook her head, “Link, its not worth it. Let’s get to Hyrule Castle as fast as we can and find that Princess.” I clenched my fists hard, took a deep breath, and ran off into the direction of my house.
“What are we doing?” Navi asked as I climbed the ladder. I jumped onto the deck and ran inside. I glanced back up at her. “I don’t know how far this castle is, but it seems like we are going on an adventure, Navi. We’ll need some supplies.” I grabbed all of the fruit in the basket on the table, and piled it all inside my pouch. Then, I grabbed blankets off the bed, water pouches, and more tunics. I quickly undressed into another tunic as well, one that wasn’t ripped.
I hurried over to the cabinet and grabbed medical supplies such as bandages, and cloths, just in case.
Any other supplies that I could possibly need, I threw inside the magic pouch. Once everything was ready, I took one last glance around my tree house.
My home.
I had an awful feeling I wouldn’t see it for a long time.
“Ready Link?” Navi asked as she pulled gently on my ear. I nodded slowly and pushed past the curtain, out into the cool forest morning. I had been in the Deku Tree all day and night yesterday, and he told me the story about the Triforce this morning.
“We’ll get all day to travel today,” Navi said cheerfully, “So we can rest tonight.”
I looked both ways for anyone watching me, and then quickly and quietly sprinted towards the exit of the forest, pushing past trees.
I finally made it out onto the bridge. The bridge connecting the forest to Hyrule. I stared into the dark opening before me, leading to a whole unknown world, unexplored by Kokiri. I moved along the bridge, when a soft and upset voice caused me to jump.
“So you’re leaving, aren’t you?”
I whirled around, grabbing the hilt of my sword on instinct. However, I let go of it immediately when I noticed my best friend standing there, with a sad look across her face.
“Saria…” I whispered. “I-I didn’t kill him. I swear. There was a curse and…”
“Oh Link… I know that… I know you would NEVER do anything that horrible. I know you Link…” She sniffed and her light forest green eyes filled with tears.
“I always knew that you would leave the forest someday, Link. You aren’t like us… but in a special way… a very special way.”
She bit her lip as a tear silently ran down her face, and held something out that was hidden in her hands before.
An ocarina.
It was a light tan color, with a strip of green on the mouth piece.
“I want you to have this ocarina. It’s mine…” I feel a small tear run down my face as well. I take her prized possession and hold it with extreme care.
“Saria?” I whisper sadly.
“When you play it,” She continues, choked with tears, “Think of me… and the forest. Okay?”
I nodded slowly and finally broke down in tears.
“Saria!” I cried.” I pulled into a final hug goodbye. She rubbed the back of my hair softly as she cried.
“Be safe Link. Please come back…”
“I promise you…,” I began as I pulled away from her, walking backwards towards the exit. “I will return.”
With that, I walked across the bridge, and crossed into Hyrule.
