I got a few questions. You say that hitting Ctrl+click on the base color while having the new layer selected's gonna let you make a vecot masks, but there are two issues: You seem to be mistaking the layer mask for the vector mask, and that step didn't work for me.

Zenity In reply to RisingManes [2006-05-27 15:10:13 +0000 UTC]
yes, sorry, you're right. But let me clarify:
using ctrl+click on a layer only brings out the selection. So, if I were to ctrl+click on the base color layer, and clicked the "add vector mask" button, then the current layer you are on (not the one you ctrl+clicked) will have a vector mask that matches the pixels of the base color.
Sorry, I seem to call vector mask "layer mask". But you're right, thanks for pointing that out for me. I hope my explaination will fix your problem.

Hmm... so, um... okay, I'm still confused. So, I have to ctrl+click the base layer thumbnail while I'm on the new layer... what?

Zenity In reply to RisingManes [2006-05-27 18:35:05 +0000 UTC]
That's right. ctrl+click the base layer, and it'll only bring out the layer's selection. But you will stay on the same layer. XD; it's a little complicated, but you don't have to have the base layer selected in your layer pallete to bring out it's selection in the workspace.

I'm trying, and the pointer changes to a "NO" sign when I hover over the Layer Mask button.

hm. I'm not really sure what the problem is then... Let's see...
hm. The only thing I can think of is maybe your base color is the background layer. I don't think using ctrl+click works on the background layer. But That may not be your problem...
What version of Photoshop do you have?

Hrm. I have Photoshop 7. :\ that might changes somethings, but I don't think it would be that drastic... Sorry, I don't know what else I can say to help you out.

ditto for the problems risingmanes is having. I've got cs2, too, and it wont' let me do the mask button with two layers selected. total bummer. I was loving the tutorial, too.
I lurve the eyes...

oh hey! I think I got the same effect for CS2!
Starting right after the new layer is created over the base color....
1: select the base color layer ONLY
2: use magic wand to select only the base color
3: select the new layer ONLY (base color should still be outlined)
4: add layer mask (it actually changes to 'vector mask' after you push the button, btw)
5: continue witht he awesome tutorial! =3
(um.. sorry if I'm stepping on toes... I just wanted to help people who have the same version as me (and it'll help you, too, Zenity, if you ever upgade! ))

.....XD That's... exactly how I do it.... isn't that how I say to do it in the tutorial? :[ maybe not... ahaha. it IS like 2 years old, anyway. XD sorry about that!

TsukiGoKim In reply to Zenity [2007-12-04 09:14:52 +0000 UTC]
lol, it's ok. and no, it says differently in your tut. you said that it'll automatically make the selection when i ctrl + click the base color, but it doens't select it, plus i can't click the layer mask button when I have two layers selected.
I am silly for replying to something so old~

Zenity In reply to TsukiGoKim [2007-12-04 12:23:11 +0000 UTC]
ahahah yeah I should replace this. I think in my tutorial I meant if you control + click the thumbnail of the "base color" layer, then it will select the base color. XD but EH! this tutorial is very old and bound to be full of problems. XD so maybe you could find your own (better) way of doing it! ahah.

o_o I can get nearly the same effect using two layers and the brush tool. But it's always fun for me to see the ways other artists do things.

I've been attempting to fake-ass the way you draw eyes for a while now (they're so expressive, I feel it would really help my Irkens) and OMFGYAY XD
I was actually gonna note you about it this weekend (since I move in to my dorm on the 26th and would have little to do the next day XD)
SO OMFGYAY XD
