Description
"This can't be real...this can't be true, that from now and forevermore these writhing serpents will by tresses. This must be a lie, that I may never look upon the face of another, without watching thier warm features disappear into stony masks."
Poor Medusa, I always draw her so tragically....next time I'll have to portray her revelling i her snakiness. I like how this picture turned out, I'm always happy when I go back to pencil, it may not be as smooth, and it looks grainy, but it looks much better than digital for me.
Reference was used, just a picture of myself that I took to get the pose and the fall of the dress right.

wow... this is really cool! You certainly did an excellent job capturing the emotion of the moment here! I LOVE how you colored the snakes! All the different patterns in the browns are really nice. You also nailed the dress and the cloth texture.
I actually found a short story in Bruce Coville's "Half Human" about gorgons. It's called "Becoming" by Nancy Springer.
A bit of summary:
Dusie lives a somewhat normal life with her single mother in New York City. (Or at least as normal as it can get with an eccentric artist for a mom) That is, until her hair turns into snakes. Dusie soon discovers her mother is none other than a gorgon, her namesake is that of her mother's deceased sister, Medusa, and there are other creatures like her just trying to scrape a living in New York.
It's definitely a spiffy little short story especially if you're into Greek mythology.

Although digital mediums look smooth and polished, there's something about traditional mediums, such as pencil, that have more of a human touch. Her dress came out especially nice. Also, Medusa is always portrayed as a menacing monster, so it's interesting to see her as a more vulnerable, tragic character. Nice work!

I like this portrayal of her very much! It does have the perfect tragic look to it. I have to say that I also really look forward to a picture of her reveling in her snaky hair though, just because I get thie really random picture of her in my head when I think of that...I really hope that made sense.

So what is the story of Medusa?
All I know is her hair is made of snakes and she turns people into stone.
Hmmm, I always thought of Medusa as evil.
Your picture is making me rethink my whole concept of her.

Well there's kinda 2 versions...in both he was very beautiful before changed. In one story she was very vain, and claimed to be more beautiful than the goddess Athena, and so Athena in a jealous rage turned her hair to snakes and made it so she could never look at another without turning them to stone. In the second version she was raped by Poseidon in Athena's temple, and so enraged was Athena that someone had desecrated her temple she changed Medusa in the same way. There's also just the story that she was a hideous Gorgon....I just like picturing her as beautiful.....
