Description
sorry to all my harpg watchers; I promise there'll be more horse art again soon <3these will be the last 'two' projects that I'll post here from my university portfolio because I might pursue this project in future for my actual portfolio
I originally started this project to apply in Berlin before I changed my mind, anyway, I still like the idea the prompt - which was the single word 'hive' - gave me
these are my notes for the setting:
post-gas-war
technology a little more advanced than today (due to the war)
-> survivors moved to the highest inhabitable places on earth due to the gas sinking down to lower regions; a couple ‘Hives’ (bunkers) were built in advance, rich and/or important people get to seek shelter, poor/unlucky survivors built their own shelters from supply containers around it
travel & trade by air
this ‘Hive’ (shown in the concepts) is set the highest and of the greatest authority because: referenced from La Rinconada (Peru; currently highest inhabited place), slum inhabitants mine gold from the mines in exchange for food and filtered oxygen (very high altitude); gold barely loses value which makes this Hive the richest. money = still power
I won't go into the storyline or mechanics I established too much yet because I'd rather tell those things in art than words to make it more interesting heh
my notes for the final bunker design:
As for the final design I decided to cut the bunker in half to showcase the interior design and functions. Previous research has already taught me about vital functions an efficient bunker needs. The commentary on the picture should be self-explanatory enough.
The efficient heat conduction allows the greenhouses to keep a different climate within each while the plants also help with the clean oxygen sustenance. The water functions as a heat transmitter as well.
Opposite of the living quarters are ‘public’ places and work places. In the ‘basement’ are several generators and machines, which naturally produce a lot of heat. People who work in those places live in the living quarters below the headquarters. The only ‘windows’ can be found in the headquarters as only they are supposed to be able to supervise the surroundings (this is where governmental and police-like figures operate).
mask notes:
Since I was having many ideas for this futuristic post-war setting from the previous project, I decided to work on oxygen masks for the people living outside of the Hive. Those would be essential so I was trying to figure out different ways to characterise the masks because they would be worn by the characters for most of the time.
After researching necessary functions of oxygen masks from pilots and mountain climbers, I consciously created some more realistic looking designs, and others, which have ‘hidden’ functions or are using the excuse of being ‘futuristic’ for the sake of entertainment and characterisation.
From the beginning I avoided covering too much of the eyes; forced to cover mouth and nose I needed to make sure the face was still mostly readable for the viewer. In my first traditional sketches I tried to explore shapes and possibilities on how to cover the crucial parts. In the process, most masks turned out rather minimalistic for better readability of the face.
I probably won't be posting more of this concept here because I'm afraid most of my watchers are interested in seeing horse related things? dunno, I'll definitely put up a link to where I'll be posting more of this project in case anyone is interested in following it

There's so many people who only watch others for one specific thing and don't want to see anything else, it's a little disappointing It looks really awesome though!
It's fine, thank you for the watch!
