Perry was built for the Texas & Pacific Railroad in 1901 by the Cooke Locomotive Works, as 4-6-0 No. 316. In 1949, he was sold to the T&P subsidiary, the Paris & Mt. Pleasant Railroad. He was donated to the city of Abilene, Texas in 1951, and began operation on the Texas State Railroad in 1974.
