I've explained this bit of head canon before, I believe in some notes in my War Crimes fanfiction. Buuuuuuuuuuut, being a very visual person myself, I felt a more pictorial version might be more memorable and helpful. So! Here ya go. ^^( I JUST REALIZED THERE ARE TYPOS!!!!!!!! Awwwww! Alphys looks so adorable as a hatchling! X33 (I like to think that lizard monsters like her and MK hatch from eggs like that of real life lizards.)

Mm! Glad you asked! Monster Kid would be somewhere in between Mid and Late stripes. Mid Stripes are usually two thick stripes, but occasionally there might be three, to mark that the monster is nearly the end of one phase and the beginning of another. Like a halfway point. Kind of like when you say to a kid "Oh, so you're 9, huh?" and they say, "Actually, I'm 9 and a HALF." It doesn't have any real significance, except to maybe the child in question. ^^

jk i kind of love this head canon its very interesting! Although im a bit dissapointed childhood years end at 14 rather than a later age, despite that I can see how that would make sense, as maturity often does start at the age of 14 and above

Well, that's assuming that humans use the same system, which they don't ^^ However, the monsters might see the stripes on her shirt and assume her age as such.
Though, I DO tend to think of most of my Frisks as being about that age (so it actually works out XD). It differs depending on which of my comics or fanfic Frisks we are discussing ^^
DeeperDown Frisk is quite young, probably about seven or eight (nine at the absolute most).

That's... actually really smart. Especially given that Monsterkind is so varied, and different species likely have different aging rates. I've always just thought of kids having stripes as a general rule, but never really thought about a more structured system of stripes to show different life stages (or when you decide to take the stripes off and be an adult, either). This is awesome and I love it.
Also, Alphys as an awkward pre-teen is just adorable.
