Elizabeth's POV:

I quickly took off my wet clothes and hung them near the window so that they could hopefully get dried soon. I proceeded to grab my new orange jumpsuit uniform which had the capitalized bold black letters on the back:

Every reminder about my current predicament sent me into a spiral of negative thoughts. Even the new jumpsuit with the rough fabric felt wrong. Usually, I prefer one that has gotten a few washes, the new ones are usually rough to the skin and just feel too scratchy which takes some getting used to. I even want the old jumpsuit that I used for my work at the artificing workshop. I was really getting so good at artificing too and now what am I going to do? From what I know everything in the MSPA is about hard labor in the mines until you drop dead from essence overuse. I need to stop this train of thought, things cannot be as grime as the rumors say, everything is always exaggerated.

Outside at a table by the corner I saw Tesia sitting by herself, I took a chair and sat with my arms crossed under my chest, looking angrily at her.

"Oh come on don't be like that, it's a bit of a rough awakening, but it's kind of an initiation thing around here," she said in kind of a non-sensical way.

"Besides if we don't get you up to speed I will also get punished for not doing my job, right now we have the training center and the common area for ourselves while everyone else is out working at the mines. You have been assigned to Rihg's crew who you met yesterday. We usually operate with 6 members, but due to some circumstances we only have 5 for the last few months. Now that you are here we are back to 6 which will increase our efficiency greatly and take off some of the burden from the other members".

"I have some training in the use of essence for physical activity, but I exceed mostly in external essence will that be a problem". I said as if to prove that I knew something about essence use.

"Not really, it is actually preferable in your case, we heard that you had some training as an artificer and if that is true it will be a big bonus for us in the longer term, though we will have to train and see what you got for now. Sounds good? "

"It's not like I have a choice of staying in my bed and sleeping all day long until my depression goes away right?" I said in an intended sarcastic tone.

"That's the spirit, see you can do it when you put your mind to it" again she said in a bit of a chirper tone which was weird for someone that was an inmate in the worst prison of the world.

"Here is the basic run-up of our day, basically our work days go from the 1st to the 6th day of the week when we get awakened at 6th bell, and within the hour we need to eat and go to the preparation room to get restrained so that we can get transported to the mines. The work shift in there is a 10-hour shift, don't worry it's not as bad as it sounds when you get used to it, afterwards we come back here eat and we have until the second 8th bell to interact and prepare for the next day. Then 7th day is the rest day where we spend it here relaxing to the best of our ability. Any questions?"

Yes, I have many questions, 10 hours x 6 days a week how is that not as bad as it sounds just sitting in a chair for 8 hours x 5 days a week using my essence was bad enough how can someone work for so long operating their essence? I was thinking and some startlement must have shown on my face.

"Again we have a system in place in our crew to prevent burnout and with you here it will get even better, not let's go and train a bit your essence so that you can use the needed amount and not a bit more".
