Title: Understanding the ‘Other’

It’s often the case that when trying to reach another individual or set of people at a meaningful level, an (explicit or implicit) sense of vulnerability comes alongside it. That is, when one’s expressions: ideas, feelings, general outlooks of things, etc. fail to communicate their meaning to another, one is in essence alienated. But it is simultaneously difficult because, at least in general circumstances, the ‘one’ must also put forth the effort to consider the obstacles (relations) that have inhibited harmonious understanding. The ‘other’ must in turn go through a similar mirrored process also taking consideration of the ‘one’s ‘ subjective and objective situation. Through careful consideration or mindfulness (a kind of meta-cognition) they can sublimate alienation and reach understanding.

In this image Asuka likely plays the role of both. (Though I imagine Shinji in the mirror position.) In either case, there’s a bitter-soft need to look inward into one self and eventually outwards onto the ‘other’.
