Mario Marionetti Jr. has always held the dream of someday being a great hero, just like his father, Mario “Jumpman” Marionetti Sr., who, years ago, rescued a young woman named Pauline Verducci (who would later become Mario Sr.‘s wife) from the clutches of an escaped circus gorilla by the name of Donkey Kong at the top of an abandoned construction site. Unfortunately for Mario, however, it would seem that he’s forever destined to be stuck in the monotonous cycle of the family trade, that being plumbing, even moving from their metropolis home in New Donk City to the lush and magical Mushroom Kingdom with his younger brother, Luigi, with the two hoping to open up their own plumbing company there.

Mario would eventually get his chance, however, when, while on a job at the Mushroom Kingdom’s royal palace, the kingdom is invaded by the evil King Bowser Koopa, who kidnaps the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, King Maxmillian Toadstool. Mario, a reluctant Luigi, and a young mushroom person named Toad would volunteer to join the king’s daughter, Princess Peach Toadstool, on her treacherous journey across the Mushroom Kingdom to the Darklands to rescue her father from Bowser’s clutches. Mario and Luigi’s mission would prove to be successful, with King Toadstool knighting them as members of the Mushroom Kingdom royal guard. With these titles, the Super Mario Bros., alongside Princess Peach and Toad, would then travel across the Mushroom World to help those in need, meeting new allies like Princess Daisy of Sarasaland, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong Jr., as well as making recurring rivals in the form of former members of the Wrecking Crew, Wario and Waluigi Scapelli.
