I know that this is gonna contradict what I might've wrote for other characters like Dr. Robotnik and Shadow, but I came up with a better idea after seeing Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and thinking about some elements of the first movie. So please do not comment about how this story contradicts the others.

Maria Robotnik (26), daughter of the brilliant scientist, Gerald Robotnik, was an engineer on the secret US military space labs known as ARK. During the course of her pregnancy, her blood tests came back positive for a one in a million disease that would kill her and her unborn child. A miracle for Maria came in the form of Blac Dhume. He asked for Gerald to construct for him a lifeform from his blood and in return, he'd give more blood samples to Gerald for treating Maria, as his blood had an element in it that fended off disease and illness. It wasn't 100% compatible with human, but it showed promise in helping Maria. Months passed and Maria eventually gave birth to her son, Ivo. Gerald's deal with Blac Dhume came to an end when his results came up with failure after failure and some inconclusive results, so Dhume wouldn't send any more blood for treating Maria. Despite the fact that one experiment managed to succeed and resulted in Shadow the Hedgehog, Dhume wouldn't respond to any of Gerald's communication requests. Maria knew it was a matter of time before she died and would spend every remaining moment with her family of Gerald, Ivo, and Shadow.

When GUN discovered of Gerald's dealings with Blac Dhume and some Blac Arms Warriors being found on Earth and combated, they boarded the ARK to arrest Gerald and destroy any of his experiments. When GUN arrived, Maria sent Shadow off to go protect Ivo and stood in the soldiers' way. When she tried to reach for the door controls on her belt, a soldier saw this as reaching for a weapon and fired at Maria, fatally killing her. When Shadow arrived and saw the fallen Maria, he lost it and unleashed all his power to combat the soldiers. Gerald, with Ivo in hand, had to activate a "Chaos Cut" device that would disrupt the Chaos Energy inside Shadow. Before falling unconscious, Shadow tried to reach out to the closest thing he had to a mom, but couldn't reach her. Gerald was arrest(and later executed), baby Ivo was taken in child protective custody, and Shadow was put on ice.

Four decades later, Shadow would be freed again and fight alongside Dr. Robotnik to protect his family even if he had some problems with what the doctor was doing. Shadow would eventually find a hologram message Maria made for Shadow if she never got to say it to him before her disease took her. She wanted so badly for Shadow to see the world, to see what amazing sights it had to offer and the good people in it. There was a lot of bad there, but Maria believed that if good people stood against it, the future would be a bright one.
