On a patrol one morning, Heitiare and his apprentice Harper come across something particularly large

Heihei takes a moment to explain them, while Harper observes her first ever sighting.

Their paws were huge.

That was the first thought that went through Harper's mind as she listened to her mentor. Or, tried to listen to her mentor. She absorbed the information like a sponge, but found it hard to look or focus entirely on anything or anywhere else when the subject of many cat's nightmares and scars was stood just below her.

They were indeed safe, like Heitiare had stated, on their high ledge. It was too steep to climb, and they were downwind anyway, but still. It made her blood rush and her stomach drop to see a beast like this so large, and so close.

She lifted her own paw up to compare. It almost looked like it might dwarf her own. She'd never seen a pelt with that colouring, either. Jet black with brown highlights and a broad silver stripe down by where she assumed their shoulders were - their shape and bone structure were so alien from a cats.

She'd seen deer, boar. Smaller predators like weasels, and larger ones, like eagles. All with different structures and furs and feathers, but there was something... awful. About a bears biology she couldn't quite place.

She slowly put her comparatively tiny claws away, and curled her paw slightly. Resting it down on the trunk of the tree she was currently hiding behind.

It didn't look that old, either, Heitiare said about this beast.

If this wasn't a fully sized adult, then... what was?

Getting home that day. She had many stories to tell her siblings and friends about her day. All of them included the special sighting, but she didn't tell her parents.

She'd learned that lesson lately.
