Description

“Alright, come on then if you’re so eager to die. These blades haven't been bloodied in far too long a time.”

This here is Roger the sellsword. He looks a bit different from my usual stuff because I finally got a drawing tablet. It aint a fancy wacom or anything, but the feeling is night and day. Before I was using a mouse and keyboard which was slow-going. This I managed to “finish” in a few hours.

Style wise, it's a bit rough around the edges, but I kind of like the sketchy sort of look it ended up having. I also wanted to try a more dynamic pose, and I think it ended up ok too. I really need to start using reference poses or something, there's still a few things that don't look quite right.

Anyway, Roger is sort of a one-off side character from a short story I did way back when, but for this bit of backstory I went ahead and co-opted him for the tabletop setting all the other characters have been from so far. I really gotta come up with a name for it, I can't just keep calling it “The Setting” lol.

Roger hails from the north, from a fishing village beyond the mountains. While reaving, he was captured by a mercenary band working for the King. He was given the choice between hanging, or joining up. He chose the latter of course. Several years later, the band was all but annihilated during one of the bloodiest battles of King Lorin’s War, and he was one of the very few survivors and somehow got through unscathed. Without a banner to fight under, he and a handful of other vagabond deserters became highwaymen. They mostly targeted the God-king’s supply trains so Lorin’s forces left them alone for the most part. After the war’s end, Roger ventured back west  seeking more honest employment. Eventually he ended up in Botown, where he lives to this day. There he works the docks, and occasionally takes on sailing commissions whenever a captain needs extra hands. He mostly drinks and whores away whatever wages he makes, but lives comfortably enough, even owning a place to call his own.

Once, on a sailing voyage, the ship was set upon by pirates. After repelling the boarders, Roger looted some very nice dueling knives from one of the dead. He would come to know later that said knives were engraved with magically imbued runeworks. The spells woven into the blades keep the edges from dulling, and make for potent weapons against many kinds of so-called monsters. Werebeasts and specters especially, there is likely a fair bit of silver in the blades, and not only in their ornamentation. His favored weapon though, is, and always will be, his father’s axe. Wrought from simple iron, it’s been in the family for generations and has been tempered by the blood of countless foes. Though the handle’s been repaired and replaced many a time, the axe head remains as stalwart as the day it was forged.
