Description
My Roleplay OC's Emilia and Elliot.Wanted to draw them together for quite some time now and when I tried ... this happened.
I love drawing stuff like this.
Needed to take a little break to finally finish this.
Now I'll go back to drawing Contest pictures.

I really like the concept of the ribbon and the fact that the man is the one blind in this case

Thank you, I'm glad you like it.
The ribbon was very fun to draw - I had been wanting to do something like that for quite a while back then.
And really, there'd be no way anyone but Elliot could be blind in this image.
He's so insensitive and blind towards other peopleβs desires as well as his own, that it sometimes hurts to write him, haha.
Emilia on the other hand is pretty empathic and observant (as well as clairvoyant), but has a lot of trouble epressing her thoughts or speaking up for herself.

Thank you for these kind words!
There is indeed a story, although it's not finished yet. They are from a play-by-post RPG.
To summarize what I tried to reflect here:
Emilia has lost all of her memory and identity. Elliot took her in and promised to help her find out what happened.
But she has difficulties expressing her emotions and desires and often feels like a puppet that can do nothing on her own or even escape her situation. Elliot on the other hand often acts provocative and is ignorant of her feelings - and to a certain degree personality - because he has a very idealized vision of her.
Naturally, that makes her quite wary of him and while she sees his softer and more likable sides, she is uncertain how far she should trust him.
All of this makes their relationship anything but easy.
(It will get better over time, but they still have a long way to go.)

awwwh, poor Emilia. that's a harsh place to be in. true, it might improve but some wounds are too deep, hope they get their happy ending

That's kind of you.
Both of them have some deep wounds indeed and some things that will haunt them for life, but at least Emilia will find a way to cope with that and improve life for herself.
I'm not sure about Elliot though, the guy has a lot of problems ... mainly being a cynical and obsessive jerk and owing his soul to a demon. XD
(But even he will learn from his mistakes someday. At least a bit.)

Zitruseis In reply to Mythiril [2015-03-17 00:30:28 +0000 UTC]
No, there isn't anything wrong with it. I'm quite cynical myself in a lot of ways.
It can become a severe problem though when you see the world only through jade-colored glasses and refuse to ever take them off ... which is something Elliot does. Behind any smile he sees an attempt to take advantage of him in one way or the other. (He's often right with that, but not nearly as much as he believes.) And then there are the obviously non-malicious people that he often views as innocent and pure, but also completely naive and foolish. (Incidentally, much of his fascination for Emilia stems from the fact that he doesn't know in which category to put her.)
Yes, there will always be scars that will hurt for a long time.
But I also think that they can make a person grow and - if properly reflected on -Β even make them stronger. Making it through a rough time can help later when life takes some unpleasant turns again. Knowing what you've already gone through and that there will be better times again can help to find the strenght that is necessery.
(At least, that's my eperience.)

yeah, i know, but being cynical is good at keeping douchbags away.Β
man, you really took the time to develop a back story to the two of them. are you planning on making it a literature of a comic?Β
same experience here really, eventually i just stopped expecting things back or good things to happen, i just go day by day and keep on fighting. i made it through the worst, i'll make it now
π: 0 β©: 1
Zitruseis In reply to Mythiril [2015-03-17 18:12:04 +0000 UTC]
Yup, I agree with that. And it can also be entertaining to do so.
I've thought about turning a few scenes into comic panels. Not the whole thing, because that would be a lot, but maybe some of my favourites. ^^
As for literature ... there technically is literature of them, because when I write my roleplaying entries I try to use more than two sentences and one line of dialogue. I also occasionally write short stories of my characters.
It's all in German, though.
It's good to hear that the worst is over.
I still hope that some good things happen to you as well.

Thank you.
I don't know if it really has a "deep" meaning, but I tried to symbolize a lot about these two and their relationship.
(The red ribbons, because they're bound together by fate and blood. His eyes are blindfolded, because he doesn't see Emilia as she is. Her pendant is shaped like an eye, because she is a clairvoyant. And so forth ... I love using symbolism. ^^)

I really like the quality of this drawing and the lineart ,it nicely done. The design of her dress is great too. My favorite part are the ribbons and how they symbolize and action between them. I like how the background also has the ribbon, and how you created a sense of space by blurring them out as the go back.

Somehow I tend to draw more detailed stuff when I'm using just my pens and a piece of paper. D: )

(I guess I might just be to unsure about myself. I feel so scared that my things ain't original enough or pretty enough even though I love to make character designs. so in my case it's all about no self confidence at these matters??Β
detailed characters are great to look at! ;u; and I do tend to have a bit of the same with my doodles)
π: 0 β©: 1
Zitruseis In reply to ThaIssing [2015-03-14 00:50:01 +0000 UTC]
(I know that feeling. Personally, I'm often concerned that the details will ruin the whole picture, so I often don't even try.
But I'm pretty sure that a person with your skills needn'tΒ be inconfident. Even if the details wouldn't look perfect at first, your coloring would completely make up for it.
And originality isn't a thing to be worried about, either. I don't think there is something as true originality anyway, because most comes from some kind of inspiration.
Taking this picture here as an example:
I wanted to draw some fine frills again, so Emilia received some. However, I've already drawn lots of frills during the last couple of years. As well as corsets, long dresses and neckties.
And I didn't want to make Elliot's sleeves boring, but didn't have any good idea. So I just run through some pages of an artbook and took some reference for his cuff from there.
The only things that are somewhat original - for my standard anyway - are the red ribbons all over the place and Emilia's pendant. I wanted to make this one look a bit like an eye, because she is an clairvoyant.
So ... I guess it's not that original in it's single components.
But I managed to draw what I wanted and I think I gave it my own touch.
And I believe that's more important than originality. ^^
... please tell me, if I talk too much.
My social filters aren't great at this time of the day.
I should get some sleep. XD)

I can see where you are at. maybe I should start draw more inspiration from all my artbooks. I love collecting those stuff!
Now when you went a bit into detail about you characters I think the pendant for Emilia is a perfect fit. I didn't really thought about it at first but an eye pendant for a clairvoyant seems like a good choice!

Yes, artbooks can be a great source of inspiration. I love collecting them, too!
Hope I'll find some nice ones at the anime convention I'll visit this month.
Thanks.
It was a spontaneous idea. I thought a pendant would be a nice addition to her outfit, so I tried to think of something that would fit her personality. And well, since there already was a bit of an eye theme with poor Elliot's eyes blindfolded ... I guess she just got the lion's share when it comes to sight. XD

I also like to collect those artbooks. I got some few nice ones by now. Like Shigenori Soejima's art book (just in case his the character designer of persona 3-4 and 5). it was so pretty even my grandma wanted one Β
spontaneous ideas are also good. sometimes the best ideas are made as a whim ;DΒ
imagine if he had to see the world from the eye of the pendant. would be kinda odd way to see Β

That sounds lovely indeed. I haven't played Persona (yet), but I know his style.
My collection isn't very big yet, but I hope to expand it. And it's always a special feeling for me to get a new artbook.
I could have danced around the christmas tree when I unexpectedly got the Pandora Hearts artbook for christmas.
Totally! And sometimes they even are what gives the picture its special touch.
... that is a very cool idea.
I suddenly feel the urge to work that into a picture sometime.

Oh yes! I really love this style and looking at the pictures is always inspiring. I've always wanted it, but I wouldn't have imagined my dad would get it for me. (He's a bit weird. Very averse to popculture from past the 80's, UNLESS he read a good critique in a respectable magazine ... because, apparently, these are less subjective or something. >_<) So this made it even sweeter to me.
I know that, too. Happens quite often just a few days after I finished and uploaded something. D:
Hehe, thanks for giving me that great idea.
Maybe I'll give that pendant some kind of meaning in her story, too~.

Jun's style is amazing so I could easily buy it myself. your dad is awfully kind that he bought you that. if it were my dad I don't even think he would manage to find that section of a comic store, I think he will end at the Asterix and Tintin section and never come back o.o"

I can only recommand the artbook. Aside from the beautiful style it has some cool ways of presentation.
Haha, I think my dad wouldn't be caught dead in a comic store or even the manga section of a book store. (Okay, maybe I'm doing him injustice ... but I really can't imagine him being there. XD)
He probably got it from the internet.
But whereever he got it for me, I'm thankful.
Yes, it is.
I hope so, too. Though it shouldn't be so hard with Emilia, because she doesn't have an incredibly fleshed out background yet.
And the fact that she has lost her memory and identity helps a lot with adding things afterwards. ^^

Haha, I remember the irritated and confused glances from my parents when I was younger and talking about manga or anime with one of my siblings.
It has gotten a bit better (especially with my mom), but as a kid, I wasn't allowed to watch anime and my parents didn't like that I spent all of my weeky pocket money on one manga volume.
Didn't keep me from watching it sometimes with my sister (she's ten years older than me and already owned her own TV) or when I went to my grandparents after school.
Yes, it does.
Emilia's background is still growing (as are most of my character's backgrounds) and I only had a few basic ideas in the beginning - and some were soon discarded and replaced. But it's very nice to think of some details, because even though she doesn't remember, I use them for nightmares or flashbacks. (Yeah, I like tormenting my OCs. XD) I think I will work the pendant as a constant item into these as well.
Mine seldom start with very detailed backgrounds, either. Just some very simple things, so I won't have to memorize a lot and can get a feeling for the character first.
And in my opinion, spontaneous ideas are the best when it comes to writing backgrounds, too.

ThaIssing In reply to Zitruseis [2015-03-15 22:34:26 +0000 UTC]
my parents let me watch that stuff but they couldn't really understand what I talk about. even to ths day I still catch my self in the act of talking anime with those poor parents I did so even today lolΒ
but my mom seems to think it is a good hobby for me and has often given me mangas (that I picked myself). it's her that got me into a lot of mangas such as Shaman king, tokyo mew mew and D.N.Angel as she was the one who gave them to me Β
that is a nice way to go!! :3Β
I-I feel so sorry for her. I want to be evil and mean to my characters but I always feel so bad and wants to make everything good again and I know I shouldn't do that all the time XDΒ
I make plain backgrounds and let effects do the rest! I don't have the strength for that but details is something I will work on now. I just redesigned some of my characters and added more details into them and my oh my it helped owoΒ
my characters are a bit based on small ideas. I got one I made just so I had an excuse for violence.Β

Zitruseis In reply to ThaIssing [2015-03-15 23:21:36 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, I think the main reason my parents didn't want me to watch anime was because they always aired on commercial TV and they were always sceptical of those. (Rightfully, actually, considering the kind of crap they show there aside from anime and hollywood blockbusters. And I think they didn't want to expose me to too much advertisement or something. )
But they also didn't understand ... maybe it has something to do with their generation, I don't know. They used to shake their heads in disbelief, when I came home from school with another volume of Ranma 1/2 and without pocket money left.
They are pretty cool with it now, though, and - as mentioned before - even gave me mangas or artbooks as birthday or christmas presents.
And thankfully, they've always supported my passion for drawing even though manga has been a great influence to me ever since I started reading them.
And it's fun, too!
Aww, I can totally understand that. It's even hard for me to torture my darlings and as I said, I really like it. Though I usually give them a chance to solve their issues or at least learn to cope with them. I also don't kill them off as much as I thought I would. XD
That sounds very good.
In my opinion, basing characters on simple ideas is good too, because it gives you a foundation and direction to work with. And it can be very interesting in hindsight to see what became of that.
I usually start out with a simple trope or archetype I either like or want to twist in a uncommon direction:
For example, one of my favourite OCs only exists because I wanted to have a badass elven princess who is not delicate or charming.
And another one was created as an antithesis to the very annoying and offensive way another roleplayer portrayed her male prostitute.
I liked both from the beginning, but I was surprised how dear they became to me and how differently than expected they developed. XD
