Description
Another piece of Shadow Hearts fanart. And this time it's Karin, my favourite among the female leads within the series.
The title refers to the one scene near the end, where Yuri gives Anne's Cross to Karin.
One of the most fascinating things I noticed while replaying Covenant, was how lots of scenes between these two completely change their meaning once you know the ending.
On my first walkthrough I found them simply adorable.
Looking at them later, I thought they were still sweet, but also somewhat creepy, pretty hilarious and incredibly tragic.
Yes.
All at once, no kidding.
(People who played this game probably know what I mean.)
Anyway, I had fun, drawing this.
I've always loved Karin's hair, so I liked that part most.
And her outfit may be slightly ridiculous, but it was a challenge to get all the details right and I'm quite proud of the results, so no complaints here.
Just one last thing:
These spider lilies are evil incarnate. Seriously, I had no idea where even to begin, when I drew them.
BE CAREFUL! THERE ARE SOME SPOILERS REGARDING THE ENDING IN THE COMMENT SECTION!
(Also, if you don't know them yet, it's time to turn on your PS2.

Thank you so much!
Yes, I was thinking of that scene while drawing this.
I really love that moment, even though it's so tragic - even moreso in hindsight.

Great piece of art!
I especially like the shadows(which were surely very difficult to make T__T)! The spider lilies are indeed something different than the flowers that one usually sees in artworks, thumbs up!
I just remembered the entire story...man I should definitely play that game again, why is there no HD port?(yeah I got the german(xD) version of shadow hearts I and covenant, in the original PS2 version)

(Ich antworte einfach mal auf Deutsch. )

Aw, don't cry, dear.
I love Karin, too.
And yes, the ending was very bittersweet, I really didn't know wether to smile or to cry.
(Or start the first game anew, when they played a part of the battle theme at the end. XD)
I'm glad you like it.
And since Shadow Hearts is my favourite series, this won't be my last fanart.

Ah, Karin.
When I first played the game I shiped her and Yuri so hard... and then there was the ending. And I was like ... ô_Ò NOOOOO
xD
I always thought she died as Anne because she knew, she had to. At least she talked a lot with Yuri about his family - and for them to meet she had to do the same as his ["real"] Mother did.
[Real, because there are two endings in SH. With the good one - and Alice alive - he would never have met Karin - therefore she could not go back in time to meet Ben/Jinpachiro. Time travelling is confusing...]

Oh yes, I know that feeling!
I always thought they would make a great and sweet couple ... and then my jaw hit the ground when I realized what was going on.
But, as mentioned before, it made my second time playing Covenant even more entertaining.
Hmm, that thought never occured to me, but it makes sense.
(Well, as much sense, as time travel can make. It always twists my brain a little. 0_o)

[But I still ship them ^^"]
Time travel is really hard for the brain so it twists mine too.

Haha, can't blame you for that.
Although I just realized ... all of this must have made Hyuga family life pretty weird.

Samhiisi In reply to Zitruseis [2015-01-12 22:14:12 +0000 UTC]
It probably did, yes.
But hey - Hyuga family can turn into deamons and spirits/gods - guess their family live is pretty weird anyway.

That's true.
And considering what kind of world they are living in and what other people live there, they are actually pretty normal by Shadow Hearts standards.

This piece is incredible. Although the ending to Covenant does bug me a bit as I can't see strong fearless Karin after changing her name to Anne and protending to be Russian while with Ben Hyuga being so easily killed by Zombies when Yuri is a little boy.

Thank you!
Yes, I know what you mean.
That part bugged me, too, and even when I try to think that maybe a few years of peaceful farm life has made her fighting abilities grow backwards, I'm not satisfied in the least. Karin is the character I feel most sorry for.
Aside from that I loved the ending, though. ^^

I see partly why they still made it cannon for her to die when Yuri was little because it unlocked his powers of the Harmonizer but I think hearing of his dad's death would have worked too seeing as he died shortly after from becoming Seraphic. But then again there were several years between the games and writers usually forget something by then.

Zitruseis In reply to Andrassa [2015-01-07 12:49:37 +0000 UTC]
Yes, that's true.
My guess is that they didn't plan what Anne's identity was, when they developed the first Shadow Hearts game.
And then, when they decided who it should be, there was not really much they could have done, except maybe retconning one of the saddest scenes of the first game and explaining it with time travel, but I'm not sure if that would have been better ...
I just think her death was rather unthankful, considering all the things she successfully overcame during Covenant.

Andrassa In reply to Zitruseis [2015-01-07 22:41:38 +0000 UTC]
The only logical explanation I can think off that has any chance of holding up is that Karin willingly died by the Zombies so Yuri could become the next Harmonzier. Although personally I thought it would have been fun on New Game+ that Alice would join the party seeing as it's cannon for Yuri to prevent her death at the end of the second game.

Oh yes, that would certainly have been interesting.
It really is a shame that there won't be any more Shadow Hearts games.
I enjoyed them all and think there was (and still is) plenty of potential left.

Yeah it is. A lot of game franchises these days go over board and ruin the whole experience so it's sad to see gaming franchises in good standing like Koudelka/Sahdow Hearts get cut off when they can still do so much. And I know complained about 3 because it wasn't as dark as previous games but I still liked it especially Hildegard, it was fun to see the youngest Valentine sibling.

I think that these days, there are less games that try to do things different as there were during the PS2 era.
And one thing I enjoyed very much about the series, was that the games really stood out among other JRPGs for their setting, characters and humor. (I still sometimes find myself giggling over the fact that you can beat up an archdemon using a frozen tuna. )
I didn't like From the New World nearly as much as the others, also mainly because it lost most of the previous games' dark atmosphere, but I still think it's a good RPG for it's other virtues. The gameplay was fun, I liked the locations and while non of the new characters were as dear to me as Yuri & co. I found them quite entertaining and likable.
And I loved meeting Keith and Joachim again!

Exactly! Everything seem's to be shooter's these days and when it is a RPG it's always real time battles, the way of turn based battles has completely gone by the way side.

Zitruseis In reply to Andrassa [2015-01-08 23:12:50 +0000 UTC]
Yeah. As much as I appreciate the battle systems of Tales and Star Ocean, some nice and classical turn based system, instead of either action or strategy, would be nice again.
The most recent RPG I played, that had one of these was Lost Odyssey ... and I think it is already seven years old.
But battles aside, I haven't seen that many RPGs with interesting settings lately.
I don't have a problem with the usual fantasy/science fiction stuff, but something different now and then would be nice, too.
Shadow Hearts with its alternative history/horror is one thing, but there were also Wild Arms with western, Valkyrie Profile with Norse mythology and Suikoden with politics and war in a somewhat Asian setting, as well as some less well known games I'm probably forgetting.

And when you play a game these days you know what's going to happen next but it's too easily predictable. Although recently I did find and RPG with a turn based system and have been playing it like crazy but unfortunately it's on 3DS and PSVITA so I always end up running th battery low while playing then have to wait forever for it to charge.

It's called Conception II: Children of the seven stars. It's a download only although I do think R18+ rating is over doing it as there is no content that goes over MA15+. It's a great game by Atlus the guy's behind the Persona series so a lot of the music is similar and being a product of Atlus it's part dating sim, part RPG. A a fair amount of the add on content is free but most of it you won't get to use until the second half of the game.

Actually I just randomly came across while looking through the Nintendo E-Shop sales. I also think the low marketing may be due to the first game only being available in Japan.

So cool, you've remembered to put all those little details into her outfit!
I miss playing this game, it was my favorite from this series! I just wish there was a "hard" mode option, or some sort of extra challenge, for the 2nd walkthrough though...no really, it becomes a breeze once you have enough SP to use Dark Seraphim or Jutendouji

Hahaha, I'm glad you appreciate that.
I wanted to get everything right, so I used some official art as reference and was a little overwhealmed by the amount of small details I had never really noticed before. But I don't regret this extra work - it was fun and a good learning practise, too!
Yes, I agree with that.
On my first walkthrough, the difficuilty was allright, a bit challenging even towards the end, because I didn't do many sidequests.
The second time, though, I almost felt sorry for my enemies, even before I got the best fusions.
