.:.Peter - Male - 15yo - Husky/Shark Hybrid.:
--
- fragile emotionally and physically
- Afraid of flying, swimming, existing...
- he can be bashful but he's usually just terrified rip
- Currently training to be a knight and he HATES IT SM
- Rainbows comfort him, so he wears a rainbow cloth around his wrist to look at when he's stressed <33
- His size changes depending on his mood. (extreme negative moods cause extreme size changes, big and small)
- The buttons on his collar summon his wings!! He was supposed to be born with eagle wings, but a mix up caused him to be born with a shark tail instead. Whoops.
- also he has a fluffy butt lol

oOF henlo. The linework is on POINT here, and the colors are great! I think there is just too much going on though, as I suggest you simplify the character for your sake, and possibly anyone who plans to draw him. I suggest you remove the wings and collar, but I think the bandana, shark tail, blood from mouth and nose, and the design are quite good! I still think you should simplify the patterns though, as it gives your audience too much to look at, as my eyes don't focus on one particular part of the character. That isn't bad, I think there should be some central part of him that physically stands out. Plan to add his backstory soon. Why does he have all of these features? Do they actually matter to the character and what they stand for? Is there something deeper to why he is fragile, and why does he have blood dripping from his mouth and nose? Without a backstory, your character is flat, and without it, no one can relate. Without essential backstory in the description / minimal backstory, many readers / audience members have all kinds of questions, which can be answered another day, but if they were included, why were they so important to include in the design?
danG that's long

Thanks for your honesty!! I tried out a lot of different things when originally designing him and he looked pretty blank without his markings, so I personally don't think that theirs too much going on with the design. Also there is reasoning behind his design, I just couldn't fit it in the ref lol It's all in the link in the description if you're curious!! He's still new though so not everything is there, just some stuff explaining his looks.
Thanks for the critique, I'll keep what you said in mind!!

No problem! I have tried my hand in character design, and found out that simpler is better. Let's go with Starria. She has minimalist designs / patterns, but what is there has a story behind it, giving the character purpose and something for the audience to latch on to. I really understand how characters must have their story done before the design is made or during, which allows the design to match up with the story accurately. You can write the story after the design, it just gives yourself a bit of a handicap.

Lol I feel the exact opposite tbh XD I get design ideas at random so I usually make their design before hand and just give them a few basic traits before adding them to a story. Like I do have a lot of characters that have full backstories and history but at the same time I have over 200 OCs so I don't exactly feel like each one needs a super in-depth detailed story lol. And I like to have a mix of designs!! I used to have a bunch of OCs with only super simple 2 color designs but now I like to have OCs with different colors and patterns so I can get better at drawing.

I do like the main idea of getting a character, then you could base a story around one. For me, my princess cadance has no backstory whatsoever, regarding a small time warp mishap, but I want to flesh her out more, so I am gonna make some sort of comic to explain her missing wings since she is a pony, but has her horn, and the character she is based off of has wings, and why she doesn't hav / show them. (SPOILER I GUESS?)
