Half-Life meets Doom! In the backstory for original Doom, "Doomguy" was sent to Phobos as a military prisoner/laborer (for killing his commanding officer for ordering his troops to fire on civilians which sort of happens in the movie), so there's a connection even beyond aesthetics.
