It is my personal head-canon that Phantom did everything he did out of anger, grief and loneliness. I mean, he was only fourteen when he was PAINFULLY ripped out of Danny, and the fact that Danny ASKED for that to happen was the worst betrayal of all. He ripped Plasmius out of Vlad, intending to gain another half and fill the voice Danny left in him, but what he failed to realize was that if he couldn't even beat Danny's will (As seen in "Identity Crisis"), how could he possibly defeat Plasmius' willpower?

When they merged, what was born was Vlad controlling Phantom's body and Phantom was forced into the background, trying desperately to gain control because he didn't want to KILL Danny!
Trapped by Plasmius and rejected by everyone, Phantom battles with Plasmius for control of his own body, but the older ghost had twenty years of experience over his one, and it was a battle easily lost.
Helpless, he can only watch as the world he knew and loved was destroyed by his hands, the love he yearned for never reaching him because of Plasmius' hateful actions making everyone despise him and want him dead even more than before.

Someday I'll do an adult Dan Phantom...someday...
