Description
This is a recreation of a famous M.C.Escher painting called "Relativity". Unlike a painting itβs 3-Dimensional. Modeled, textured and lighted in Maya 5. It almost identical except for some minor details that could not be there coz the model was build using only NURBS... and there are limits with them. No polygons in this model all. Here is a LINK to the original painting/
This is my first shading and lighting project in Maya.
Right now I am adding little characters and other small details. Will submit result shortly.
Comments are welcome.

Yep. Everything, except the backgrounds. For that I used artwork of some members of this board... kinda like a collaboration of the work. I asked a bunch of people, some said no and some agreed to help so I am featuring their artwork within my layouts u know... there is also a "special thanks" portion on a link page where I give credit to those who helped ...

Cool. I liked it... Maybe we can chat sometime, Ill bet a collab would work nicely between us.

Sweet stuff there... I really like the original piece a lot. I give you a lot of credit for making this pic in 3D, it's hard enough doing it in 2D. How long did it take you, out of curiosity? One other question, where are the characters?

zoomzoom In reply to imperfect-angel [2004-08-29 05:17:09 +0000 UTC]
Well first of all, thank you very much for a good comment. Second, before I answer your questions, I just want to mention that this was a school project for shading and lighting class. So it took me about a 10 days model and about a week to texture. Reason it took that long is because I was learning it in a process. Also we had to do our scene of choice only using NURBS and that was a bitch to do. Almost impossibleβ¦ and finally the reason there is no character is because I was running out of time and project was for shading and lighting class, so I skipped on things that I would not be graded onβ¦
All thought I do plan to convert all this NURBS madness into polys, fix some problems, make it more accurate and add characters.

Well, for the most part, that makes a lot of sense. All but the NURBS thing, I have never worked with 3D anything so I have no idea what you're talking about.

zoomzoom In reply to imperfect-angel [2004-08-29 06:13:44 +0000 UTC]
NURBS means - Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines basically another way to model. Not very popular because itβs very hard. polygons an subDs are what used mostly... it may be good for wires or very symmetrical items like tires, vases, cups... stuff like that, but not for architectural modeling.. So it was an extra challenge.

oh, I see... now everything makes sense... thank you for that explanation

This is a very well done piece. Something i've always found very valuable on 3D works is to make every object in it fit with the others, make a solid design, that everything has the same style, and your piece its exactly that On the other hand, you should work a little on the atmosphere, shadows are too dark, i think you should add radiosity, really, with such a great design it would look awesome. If your pc can't handle it, i would recomend a higher ambience to textures. Just my opinion
, great job !

Ha-ha! Great comment. Thanks... well it's not that my pc can't handle it, its more me not liking working with textures and lighting, plus this is one of my first projects I ever done with textures in maya. So....
but I am getting better... I think. Do I?

Hehe well I'm also starting with maya... i'm used to 3ds max, but i think you're doing quite well managing textures and models

Thank you thank you. At some point I am planning to convert it all to polygons, fix mistakes and re-submit with characters. Some suggested that I should design something more complex then this on my own...

damn, I'm confused. Escher reminds me most of an artistic recreation of the "Theater of the Absurd."

I think the wireframe would make my head hurt! Although, we are going over 3D rotations around the different axis' (axies?) in Calculus... that is almost as scary, no?

Awesome dude!
Which impossible one were you thinking about doing? I always liked waterfall the most, but it would probably end up being the hardest.
Best of luck though, lemme know when you post your next one, or you do more with this.

Very nice, although the color seems very saturated which is at odds with Escher's penchant for black-and-white, you might consider removing color entirely. Why NURBS only? Anyway it's cool, I look forward to seeing it develop!

NURNS was a requirment because its a school project. also I could not have any characters and it had to be in color coz class is shading and lighting. didn't want my grade lowered...

That is definitely interesting to loom at... I imagine it would be hard to create that sort of thing with a program based on logic. So, which impossible building are you going to try? 'Ascending and Descending'? 'Waterfall'? 'Belvedere'?

zoomzoom In reply to avlblu [2004-02-29 21:22:34 +0000 UTC]
Well... I do not deny the fact that it was a bitch to create this, but not because of the logic based program. U see this peace is not an impossible one. Means it can really be. The reason it was hard is coz it had to be made out of NURBS... it almost made it impossible. Well for a beginner I guess.... thanks again.

i have like ten of his posters.
very nice recreation. everything is there except from the figures of course. maybe if you got poser you could try to put them in too
very nice though

Yep. I actually got the book and as I mentioned in a description, I am working on putting people in and also changing the texture to B&W.
Love Escher too... After this I am planning to recreate one of the impossible ones.

Yea. This one is very possible. I actually saw a LEGO version of it. Pretty tight. I am thinking of recreating this with sculpy(clay).
And yes even those impossible ones are possible in 3D coz its all about how you see it.
