Description This time in the WILD!    Small numbers of California Condors (Gymnogyps californianus) are now breeding at a few localities in California, Arizona, and Utah.  This individual is part of the population that has been established along the Big Sur coastline in southern Monterey County, California.  I was on high alert as we drove through the area, checking every vulture and hawk in hopes of a condor; then I spotted this monster of bird flying low over the highway!  We pulled over and watched this juvenile and two adults circle above us for about thirty minutes.  There huge size was immediately apparent as they dwarfed the Turkey Vultures that accompanied them.  If you're a birdwatcher like me, you'll be happy to know that the American Birding Association recently declared wild California Condors to be "countable", so they are now officially wild birds with self sustaining populations, though most still bear tags and transmitters.

The thing is, their range extended much farther north (to the Pacific Northwest, where there are currently a few released ones in Oregon, but they should be as far up as Canada) and to the east (to Florida) before human impact.

Hopefully they'll one day have that range again, but I kind of doubt it...

That would never happen until we realize that Gymnogyps californicus is a misnamed beast, and that even its 1500's distribution was one where it had been wiped out from the rest of the continent, and by a mostly human cause.

It was really an awesome experience, my highlight of the trip!

I've never had a Bald Eagle in my yard, that must be exciting!

Honestly it's not. The real excitement comes when one of the ospreys (we have a mated pair nesting in a dead tree back there) goes for a fish in the pond! If you know their hunting habits, you'll agree!

Very familiar with Ospreys and their habits, it's always cool to see them hunt.
