Description

UPDATE:  THE NEW 2015 VERSION IS AVAILABLE >>>HERE <<<

A Copy of the Disclaimer:

    "
This supplement is intended to be a companion for Gregory S. Paul’s impressive work The Princeton Field Guide to Dinosaurs, and as such, exhibits some similarities in format, text, and taxonomy.  This was done solely for reasons of aesthetics and consistency between his book and this supplement.  The text and art are not necessarily reflections of the ideals and/or theories of Gregory S. Paul.

The author of this supplement was limited to using information that was freely available from public sources, and so more information may be known about a given species then is written or illustrated here.  Should this information become freely available, it will be included in future supplements.

For genera that have been split from preexisting genera, or when new information about a genus has been discovered, only minimal text is included along with the page number of the corresponding entry in The Princeton Field Guide to Dinosaurs.  Genera described solely from inadequate remains (teeth, claws, bone fragments, etc.) are not included, unless the remains are highly distinct and cannot clearly be placed into any other known genera; this includes some genera that were not included in Gregory S. Paul’s work, despite being discovered prior to its publication.

All artists are given full credit for their work in the form of their last name, or lacking this, their username, below their work.  Modifications have been made to some skeletal restorations for aesthetic reasons, but none affecting the skeleton itself.  Should any artist want their piece modified or removed from this supplement, they may contact the author.  All life restorations are by the author and based on the accompanying skeletal diagram.  All artwork corresponds to the entry immediately above it.

The author apologizes in advance for any typos, overlooked information, and inconsistencies that may be present in this and future supplements."

.....................................................................................................................................................................................................

Four years in the making!  I hope to make one of these available for free download at the end of every year, so future ones won't be quite so long.    I hope you all enjoy them and are able to use them effictively as a reference to the latest in dinosaur discoveries.

If you find any errors, or have an inquiry regarding the skeletals (either to contribute, modify, or remove), be sure to send me a message or note and I will happily make changes to the supplement as necessary.  Information included in the supplement is based almost entirely on published material, so there's nothing on rumored remains or anything that isn't official yet. With that said, there are a few exceptions to this rule where the info in question has been available for some time and does not seem destined to change drastically (ex: Nebulasaurus).

Regarding the taxonomy used in the supplement, I mostly accepted new species/splits (ex: centrosaurine ceratopsians), where as Gregory S. Paul would likely have rejected them.  However, I do acknowledge the "lumping view" in most cases with the alternative classification in parentheses (ex: Vagaceratops (or Chasmosaurus) irvinensis).

Talented Deviants whose skeletals are used include:

UPDATE:  Revisions made to certain entries.
UPDATE:  Now with a higher res Ningyuansaurus skeletal, courtesy of the very generous
UPDATE:  Made modifications as per the request of one of the artist.

I just realized there is no Metriacanthosaurus in this or the original book. Why is this? As far as I know it is not known from material that is too horrible bad, I mean it has far better remains than Becklespinax, Oxalaia, or Duriavenator.

What a coincidence, I just noticed that the other day and added it to the supplement!  I had originally overlooked it because I thought its remains could be synonymous with some other little known British theropod, but recent work seems to show it is actually quite distinct, both taxonomically and geologically.  Perhaps this is why Paul excluded it as well...

Yeah as far as I know, there is nothing really similar to it in that regard. Most of it's closest relatives lived half way around the world, and synonymy with just about anything else makes no sense, so it probably is distinct.

Thanks for adding it to the supplement! It is one of my favorite dinosaurs and I was disappointed when it was not in here or the original book.

Followup question.

Will the second supplement be included with the first supplement, or will they be two separate things?

And second, will the second supplement be a new deviant submission, or will it update this one?

And lastly, did you know that Gregory S. Paul is nearly finished with a second edition of the book?! dml.cmnh.org/2015Oct/msg00127.…
Ooh, I am excited!

Sorry for the interview.

The second supplement will be a new deviant submission and will also include all of the information from the first one, some of which has changed a little.

Wow, I hadn't heard that!  Now you've got me excited too!

This is incredible.

So I assume it is now time to be working on Part 2, perhaps?

Thanks!

Yup, part two is currently in progress.

Was reading the entry on Torosaurus and found this:

"In the possible event that T. latus is refound to be a form of Triceratops, T. utahensis would take on the genus name Torosaurus."

Um, no. If Torosaurus latus were confirmed to be the adult form of Triceratops, then Torosaurus utahensis would still require a new genus name, as Torosaurus would be occupied by Triceratops as a junior synonym. In taxonomy, when two taxa (in this case genera) are deemed synonymous, the now invalid name cannot be re-used for something else, because technically, it's already taken. It's the reason why we can't just slap "Brontosaurus" onto any new sauropods we happen to find.

Although... Considering Paul's skewed view of dinosaur taxonomy, it's not exactly out-of-character.

Ah, interesting.  I wasn't aware that junior synonyms fell into disuse due to an actual ICZN rule, I always thought it was just out of personal preference.  I'll amend that sentence asap.

How does my taxonomy and other inferences look otherwise?

I mostly just skimmed over it, but apart from that one discrepancy, the taxonomy is sound.

I noticed you mention possible future supplements, may I suggest instead adding anything that would've been in future supplements to this one and eventually publishing it? It would make an excellent companion to the original book and I would very much like to be able to have them both on my bookshelf .

ZoPteryx In reply to Yutyrannus [2015-01-18 22:50:55 +0000 UTC]

Publishing at this point is out of the question, as it contains images that are not my own.  Even if I made all my own skeletals, the format is so similar to the original guide that I'd fear it'd be a copyright infringement.  Your welcome to print your own copy of course!

As for the future supplements, I hope to post a new one at the end of every year.  I'd love to include them in the old one, but the file size is so large already that the original word doc was taking nearly three minutes to save, I'm not sure what would happen if I enlarged it further.  Still, it'd be nice to have all the info in one place.  Conclusion: I think I'll do both, that way the word of the new info gets out via the update and those that already have the original will get the new info.

Yutyrannus In reply to ZoPteryx [2015-01-19 03:06:48 +0000 UTC]

Unless you get permission to publish them from all of the other artists .

Yeah, I think I may print my own copy, I'll probably wait a few years though so I can put all the supplements together (96 pages would be a rather small book next to the original guide which is about 600 pages), only problem is that just from printing the whole book I may run out of ink .

True, I didn't think about that.

Amazing work on this!
I value my copy of the Princeton guide quite high, even with its shrink-wrapping and genera-lumping, and thanks to you, it isn´t outdated anymore
Will definitively print this out along with upcoming supplements
Also an excellent summary of our most recent dinosaur discoveries, a very useful reference

I'm impressed by overall view and surprised, that I saw my skeletons in your work You also add a lot of effort to make your reconstructions shrink-wrapping GSP style (a bit outdated, but we know that!). And the informations should be helpful! As for me, it's ok, but what about other people permissions to use their work?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZoPteryx In reply to reminegrest [2014-12-25 21:23:34 +0000 UTC]

Well you've made some excellent skeletals, I was happy to include them!   Yeah, the life reconstructions are little too shrink-wrapped for my liking, and in hindsight I probably should have just made them in my own style.  I'll do that next time.

As for the other artists, I checked their main pages and deviation pages and didn't see anything against using their work for nonprofit projects.  I made sure to give them all credit and by including their icons in the description they should receive a "mention" (did you receive one?) alerting them to the existence of the supplement.  As stated in the disclaimer, if anyone would like their work removed I'll be more than to oblige.

"did you receive one?"- Yup, that's how I found out a supplement
Well, in my opinion, every single author have a rights to own their own works, unless there is an information about permission for public use. Hope, they all will like it, like me
Ah, and there is a bit better version of my Ningyuansaurus skeleton, if you want to:
img7.imageshack.us/img7/9031/s…
It isn't perfect, I made it because of reconstruction, but the proportions are correct.

Thanks!  I'll incorporate this higher res version into an update that I already need to make; a dozen new stegosaurs were just named! (though I suspect most are nomen dubiums, but I haven't translated the paper yet)
