Description harry's situation in the fifth book, but not any particular scene

imagine if you had to study for a test that supposedly determines your future, and everyone in your school hates you. You are being physically tortured by a teacher who teaches what used to be your favorite subject. You are being ridiculed by everyone from the press to the public to the government. Your parents are dead and your only guardian is cooped up in a dark, gaunt house. Everyone, the "good," the "bad" are all out to get you. The world hates you but somehow you're still responsible for it's safety even though you don't have a clue on how to protect it. And you're only 15 years old.

Plus, he probably had PTSD (which is totally understandable considering he'd just witnessed Cedric's murder and had been tortured by a psychopathic dark wizard) and depression (which was probably a combination between the traumatic event he'd just experienced and the mental effects related to it, years of abuse and neglect from his relatives, grief and guilt because of Cedric's death, his exposure to the dementors, the torture from his teacher etc.) No one knows anything about psychology or mental disorders so he has no idea why he thinks and feels the way he does; all he knows is that he hasn't felt like himself since the end of his fourth year, has nightmares, is irritable, angry or miserable all the time, feels like he's always in danger, wants to die and probably has thoughts of suicide etc. Poor guy probably thinks he's losing his mind, is confused and scared. To be honest, the fifth book is one of favorites of the series because it makes Harry seem more human, vulnerable and what he goes through does effect him. Even in this picture he looks depressed like he's worn-out and apathetic.

It's a wonderful picture and captures Harry's mood perfectly. Thank you! Harry is and always will be my favourite character in literature and I love him so much!

thank YOU! I'm glad you like the picture

a lot of people chose other characters in HP as their favorite character, which is understandable considering there are a lot of good characters out there but personally i like harry the most because well...just look at all the things he had to go through! he's 100% awesome!

Your description sounds like it should have been the back of the book! *sniff*  (Wonders if 'cooped up in a dark, gaunt house' is a nod to the Guants?)

I found myself nodding along to the comments between you and SacredCandybar. Not a huge Dramione fan myself (Drarry for me, sorry, hehe).

There is just something about this work that quietly screams his desolate emotions. Maybe it's the tilt of his head or the way his wrists are crossed. Not sure, but whatever 'it' is - wow.

Awesome job as always.

thanks so much for the comment!

I'm glad you caught on to all the subtleties of the picture. I wanted to portray Harry in such a way that showed his tired restraint that he's stubbornly held all these years - no matter the situation

i think that while it is noble of him to hide his pain, it's not a very healthy existence to be in

i'm glad he's a strong person because i dunno who else would have the strength to piss away their whole childhood to save the world

anyway, enough on my rambling lol

I'm glad you like the drawing

Yes, this, so much.  People often complain about the way Harry behaved in OotP, but taking into account all that you listed, it's kind of incredible that his is STILL a decent person.  I'd like to see how some of those people would have behaved in that situation at fifteen.....

Also, this picture, along with the comment, makes me wanna give him a hug.  I know it wouldn't help any of the above, but still........

Ikr?! It annoys me so much when people complain about harry being "emo"

I mean seriously, most people would loose their minds had they been in Harry's situation.

He was probably "emo" because he had depression. It's like the saying, "depression isn't because you are weak but because you've been strong for too long" which I think fits Harry really well. Harry had to be strong and was expected to be the hero despite being neglected and abused by his relatives and finding himself and his friends in near-death situations from the time he was eleven. People complain that he should've been a psychopath or something but when he starts showing signs of depression, they complain that he's "emo" and whiny.

good analysis. I agree as well. I liked the quote especially about depression being "strong for too long" because I not only see it as true but that it completely fits harry well during the fifth year. not to mention all the shit he went through each year.

Yeah, everything Harry had been through had finally drained him. Harry was rather resilient but everyone has their breaking point and Harry had finally reached his. Plus, he probably had PTSD from witnessing Cedric's murder and Voldemort coming back from the dead and torturing him; Harry had been through some scary stuff in his previous years but it was obvious that the end of his fourth year that it had affected him more than before and, that he'd never be the same again.
It's sickening that everyone expects so much from teenager, especially one with metal issues; poor kid probably barely had enough energy and motivation just to get to class every day and thinking about much he wants to die, how was he supposed to save the world?! He was basically punished for being mentally ill; every time he tried to talk about what happened, his teacher made him cut his own hand (so she was forcing a traumatized and depressed teenager to self-harm, how could that possibly go wrong?!), he was told that he was lying and what he’d went through hadn’t actually happened (I’m pretty sure about the worst thing you can do to someone with PTSD is tell them they’re lying about what they went through and that didn’t actually happen.) He also had a connection to Voldemort but at most I think it just magnified what was already there so he was already traumatized and depressed and the connection just made it worse.
It’s sad that people would rather have a character that’s a psychopathic killer then one that’s struggling with PTSD and depression (even though that’s far more likely and realistic than becoming a psychopath; if everyone became a psychopath because of horrible things that happened to them than our world would be far more messed up and dangerous than it already is.) Even sadder is that if Harry was a girl, people wouldn’t complain about him being depressed (guys can be depressed too you know.)

Argh!  The "emo" complains!  And about him "whining".  How much of what is stated in the book is actually vocalized by Harry?  The book is in his perspective, we're in his head, so of course we're going to see what he's thinking and worrying about.  But if I remember correctly, he was actually pretty quiet about it.

...and thus my picture

well he was quiet until he exploded in the end

sirius's death was the last straw that broke the camel's back...one hella big straw..

Exactly.  He wasn't sitting around, whining, "Oh, my life is so hard!  Umbridge hates me, the Ministery hates me, the school hates me, Voldemort hates me....WHY!?!?! T_T"  He's pretty stoic......

Heh, it's been a while since I had a good HP-related conversation with someone.  This is fun.

That's just further evidence he had depression. People with depression often keep their thoughts and feelings to themselves/share them with only those closest to them. Or if someone is self-harming they generally don't show everyone, they keep it themselves because they're ashamed. Same with PTSD, like how Katniss from The Hunger Games series only really lets Peeta know what she's going through and tries to seem strong and hide it from everyone else. Harry generally either kept his thoughts and feelings to himself or only shared them with Ron and Hermione. He doesn't share how tramatized he is either, mostly because every time he tries to talk about it, he's physically punished and told he's lying. If he was some whiny kid who wanted attention, he would be complaining and whining to everyone. I wish people would stop trivializing Harry's mental issues and realize it was serious.

that's why dumbledore was so impressed with how harry turned out, despite the dursleys

you know the deathly hallows book ruined ron for me because he left harry and hermione

i mean seriously harry suffered wayyy more and this little shi - ron...

his arm was broken jesus christ harry lost all the bones in his arm at age 12...

which is why i don't like the ron and hermione pairing...

...and yet i'm still a dramione fan and draco was a bigger shit but his family was a bad influence....so....

ok i just felt justified, guilty and justified again...
