Well, if you see cleary, the wings of a alicorns are more big than a pegasus wings and also have a big horn than a unicorn, Flurry Hearth was the first baby alicorn that official appears in the show, So it is normal that no one expected to have wings and horn that size

Equestrian Ponies have from what I can gather a Trinary Paired genetic system.
genetically, there are three Genetic divisions, Unicorn, Pegasus, Earth Pony.
now while a dominant trait will win over a non-dominant one
with a trinary pair it can also act kind of like a vote, with a non dominant acting as a tie breaker between two dominant genes.
An Alicorn ascended and natural, carries three Dominant genes of each tribe,
a Unicorn must have at least one dominant Unicorn gene. The most powerful thoroughbred Unicorns such as starswirl, Twilight, and shining armour each originally had 3 dominant Unicorn genes.

Applejack probably has 3 Dominant Earth genes, and Rainbow probably has 3 Dominant Pegasus genes
average ponies usually only have one dominant gene, the other two being non-dominant, or 2-3 matched non-dominant genes

Pinkie Pie while appearing as a normal earth pony, displays abnormal magical feats,
given her family history pinkie obviously has two earth Genes, one or both being dominant,
her third Gene could however be a dominant unicorn gene.

how does this linger on them? Cadance (plus that she was first a Pegasus) is a alicorn and Shinning is a unicorn. Its a good chance for them to give birth to a alicorn.

SHOCKING!I cannot believe there's another alicorn coming, but as usual, I don't want to panic like many others just gave up the show because Twilight turned into an alicorn. Worry that the baby one day will outlive her father while her mother will be alive as well because Cadance is an alicorn? Sorry, one of the crew members gave us a Twitter long time ago and busted the whole alicorn theory, Twilight & Cadance will live and die like any normal pony, and the baby is no exception.
Anyway, I'm not expecting this one either, I was thinking of being either a simple unicorn or pegasus (Cadance was a pegasus when younger), but as you know, Hasbro would do anything to gain sales, hence the baby would be an alicorn instead.

Hm, this makes sense. In Issue #8 (nightmare Rarity) Luna regained her magic mane after Celestia said: "You're Princess Luna now AND forever."
Atm this seems to be the most plausible theory.
