Try dropping it into a preset folder?
If you only have a .material file however, it probably won't work. You'll need to contact the creator and tell them they've only given you one file.

Great tutorial!
Is there a link to the preset shown in this tutorial? I can't find it.

whats funny is that preset is actually stolen from a design using Rinermai's young fox base.

Not sure how much I believe that.
Can I see it?

I don't have it but I remember seeing it before.

Then perhaps you're just remembering wrong, or he took some inspiration from the design.

Just curious: if I don't use presets and I put the material file in my presets folder, will I be able to see the preset on everyone who uses it? Or do they have to export their own version of the material?

Their version has to be exported and downloaded.
You need the .fhp file of a preset in order to see the preset on someone else's model, even if you actually have that preset yourself.

Zip files? I see so many of these on deviant art but they are a FPH file I believe? That's nice to know the requirment

.fhp files are exported presets that you can give out to other people. If they download them, you can see them.
Most people who are giving out actual presets stuff all the files [.cfg/png/jpg/etc] in a .zip or .rar file.

I got a .fhp preset from someone with no png/jpeg pictures. What do I do? DX

Uh, I would recommend asking them for the texture files.
Unless it's that person's preset and they gave it to you so you could see their preset, in which case, drop it in "presets".
