not necessarily remember the tribbles episode of DS9 they visited the 1701 but it was before the refit and they were on the defiant although it was cloaked

The Big E (refit 1701) is on patrol when jumped by an advanced vessel of unknown design.  The attack drastically affects the power systems without doing physical damage to the starship.  Kirk returns fire, but the weapons of the Big E cause only minor damage to the attackers.  Before the attackers can make another pass, Kirk takes the Big E into the ring system of planet to hide, repair, and call for help.  Being low on power, their call for assistance is faint.  The aggressors wait and are searching patiently for their prey.

A rift opens and the 1701E and Defiant appear.  The aggressors bid a hasty retreat.

Picard contacts Kirk using the secure captain-to-captain channel.  He explains that a group of mercenaries were hired by an unknown civilization in the Gamma Quadrant to weaken the Federation and open the Federation up for attack.  Their work points to one option - if the refit Enterprise was destroyed, the future Federation would not have developed as it did.  Destroying the Big E and her crew would cripple the Federation.  Thus, they went back in time to rewrite the past and change the future.

Captain Worf, commanding Defiant, breaks in to warn that the mercenaries were holding position just outside the solar system, and that they were scanning for them.

Kirk is stunned to see a Klingon, someone he hates and distrusts with every bit of his body, is commanding a Federation vessel.  Worf pointedly ignores the stares and plans with Picard their next move.

Picard offers to send a repair team aboard the Big E to assist with repairs and prevent the mercenaries from crippling the starship like they did.  Kirk agrees, albeit somewhat reluctantly.  The team beams aboard just as the mercenaries start their next run.

The 1701 refit is on routine patrol 6 months after the events of ST: TMP.  Deep space exploration when a temporal anomaly appears to starboard.  Out appear the 1701-E and the Defiant like bats outta hell with the anomaly quickly closing behind.

A stunned 1701 crew immediately goes to red alert while trying to communicate with the 2 unidentified vessels.  Picard and Worf (commanding the Defiant) tell Kirk that they were being pursued by a Romulan Warbird when the anomaly opened in front of them.

Admiral Kirk contacts Starfleet Command asking what to do with the two future ships.  While Kirk is talking to Command, a strange vessel appears on the E's sensors.  Unidentified by the E's computers, and being far stronger then the 1701, Picard orders the E take up position between the two ships while the Defiant goes on to investigate.

they were heading to epsilon five where they passed a cloaked romulan warbird which had set a time vortex and sent the Enterprise and the Defiant

I figure it will be like the episode of ST:Voyager when 7 of 9 had to be recruited to stop Capt Braxton from destroying Voyager. Cept the time criminal this time brought some friends...
