Description
3 on ZeroPencil on hot press water color paper
30” x 22”
Although tightly observed shards of three broken light bulbs scattered on a metal ring, the whole composition and focus of this drawing is a nod to my love of abstraction. Even the category I am submitting in is abstraction although it’s a still-life as well.
Two of the bulbs had a white powder in them, when they shatter the white powder scratches off in strange and wonderful patterns. One of the bulbs was clear; it was quite a test to draw the complex transparencies of hundreds of shards with their distortion and complex values. My main challenge was dealing with the extreme low angle of light and shadow. I set this up on the floor of my studio and worked from a combination of photos and the real pieces of glass. It certainly took much longer then expected but what else is new. Now it’s off to a rare commission…
Thanks for looking

Wow... that is just brilliant. At first I though it was a photo when I saw the thumbnail on *winktothanatos 's journal!!
The detail is simply amazing... I don't know how much it took you to draw but I'm sure it was lots and I admire you for your patience. The composition looks great. You reached your goal of abstraction
Keep up the amazing work!!
xoxo,

Somehow, the form of the fragments reminds me of the human figure. I like that, and also, the realistic way you've drawn the shards makes me feel them all over my body, so-to-speak.
