Description 3 on Zero
Pencil on hot press water color paper
30” x 22”

Although tightly observed shards of three broken light bulbs scattered on a metal ring, the whole composition and focus of this drawing is a nod to my love of abstraction. Even the category I am submitting in is abstraction although it’s a still-life as well.

Two of the bulbs had a white powder in them, when they shatter the white powder scratches off in strange and wonderful patterns. One of the bulbs was clear; it was quite a test to draw the complex transparencies of hundreds of shards with their distortion and complex values. My main challenge was dealing with the extreme low angle of light and shadow. I set this up on the floor of my studio and worked from a combination of photos and the real pieces of glass. It certainly took much longer then expected but what else is new. Now it’s off to a rare commission…

Thanks for looking

Such an incredible job on an insanely detailed and tough-to-convey image. Rendering glass is always difficult, but doing it so well with all of the broken edges and pieces seen thru it is just mindblowing. Masterful work.!

Amazing Armin, I have worked with Pencils for about 40 Years and I must say I don't think any of My work Compares. What type of Pencils do you use? And Where Can I get them? And if its not too much trouble why the Circlular Shape? Best Wishes - Gerald

Paul bigger isn’t always better you know that! Hehehehehe
Saying that I am going to do a 6foot bulb drawing next winter the scale interests me, so what’s up with East/West I am waiting to come to Hong Kong.

Shadows and shadows and shadows! Wonderfully complicated and executed....the patience that I am so limited on! With all that definition of parts, the one thing that must ring true is the printing on the light bulb and that would be the daunting thing if I had your talent

As i pencil artist i am very curious as to why you use hot press watercolor paper. If you could maybe explain to me why that would be awesome. Id would like to try it but to get some requires a lot of work and if there is really no difference between that and the hot press board i am using then i dont want to bother.

As always, incredible work.

I've been wondering: Does it get tedious to draw with such detail? I can't imagine that it doesn't wear you down after a while, but these drawings don't show any loss of focus. How do you keep your head fresh while you work?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

1nimra In reply to alexanderlasher [2006-03-07 20:10:36 +0000 UTC]

Good questions, its all about challenging myself which may or may not be noticed by the viewer. For instance overlapping glass, clear glass over powdered glass, here you have the long shadows and that’s new to me. I have to make sure there are enough challenges and different approaches technique and conceptually to make it fresh. Some say gee Armin another broken light bulb, well yes and no, it a light bulb yes but loads of differences.
