Description
3 on ZeroPencil on hot press water color paper
30” x 22”
Although tightly observed shards of three broken light bulbs scattered on a metal ring, the whole composition and focus of this drawing is a nod to my love of abstraction. Even the category I am submitting in is abstraction although it’s a still-life as well.
Two of the bulbs had a white powder in them, when they shatter the white powder scratches off in strange and wonderful patterns. One of the bulbs was clear; it was quite a test to draw the complex transparencies of hundreds of shards with their distortion and complex values. My main challenge was dealing with the extreme low angle of light and shadow. I set this up on the floor of my studio and worked from a combination of photos and the real pieces of glass. It certainly took much longer then expected but what else is new. Now it’s off to a rare commission…
Thanks for looking

Amazing abstraction. As well as a great transition from the portraiture.
Thanks for sharing.

oh I love this!
Your portraits are always perfect, but I love the light bulb work you do best. Probably because I've also (attempted) to make sketches/works based on the concept of a shattered light bulb. There's so much for the audience to confuse themselves with when it comes to intepretations.. .. ohh I praise it, I really do.

We just started drawing bottles with charcoal in drawing class today. I actually had a flash of your work when I was looking at all the lights reflected in the bottles' dark glass. It was extremely difficult and it just made my appreciation for talent like this sky rocket. You're still the most amazing pencil artist I've ever seen. Keep it up!

Thank you so much, when I was a kid growing up with an artist for a father he made be draw a “fork in a glass of water” constantly, sure child abuse but it make me learn to see, and most of all trust what I see.

I'll never be that good...so instead of getting down with depression, I shall extend a hand to you and a salute. And I will secretly pull out what hair I have left in the background of solitude...lol. Two thumbs up!!

i love your Shattered series..and i think i have an idea why you've considered this as an abstract mindblowing detail as usual..i especially love the transparency of the shards on top showing those other much tiny tiny shards and the floor beneath

This is really, really stunning. I'd love to be able to see it full sized, or at least bigger than the full view here. I keep trying to look closer at the details in the center with the tiny shards and it's making my head hurt.
Beautiful work.

interresting, though the abstraction isn't clear to me... then again, that's my definition of abstraction. You can almost feel that it's there, but like smoke, it wisps away as soon as you try to cup it in your hands...

The abstraction is how this is arranged in an abstract composition, where the design is more important then the bulbs Instead of paint leaving the marks it is the illusion of glass shards that do the mark making.
Thank you

quite magnificent.
do you just use the standard 5h-5b drawing pencils or something of the sort?

No I use only a very small grouping of pencils, B, 2B and sometimes H that’s it. I don’t like the soft pencil like 6B or 8B its to grainy.

You keep doing this and I might develop some problems...
Every time you come out with a new addition to the "Shattered" series, I end up 3 inches from the screen, slowly shaking my head.
You weren't kidding when you mentioned the wonderful patterns on the powdered glass - those are cool and you did a great job with their textures and the shadows.
But even after seeing your art for a while now, it's still hard for me to figure out what might have been the most challenging part of this piece. Would you mind sharing? I'm sure others would be able to gain a better appreciation for the work if they knew, as well.
thanks

The most challenging are the total transparences and the very light gray background.
Thanks

Very nice piece. Once again you've placed so much great detail into your work. I like the angle you chose, and love the shadows especially. The clear pieces of glass come thorugh quite nicely. The tiny little pieces look amazing. This must have been a real strain on your eyes. I know that eventually my eyes would start darting back and forth like crazy, if I were to try and stay absolutely true to the image before me. Beautiful work as usual. I have yet to see a piece less than perfect from you.

Hi
This is an extremely well done piece of work.
It is a wondeful idea to combine the background drawing as a stage for the rest of the work.
Your placement of the parts of the light bulb pieces were placed perfectly to finish this well crafted work.
It is noce to see that there is someone out there that does not always use a PC to create such great works like this one.
Keep it up and i am very impressed. I am going to have to visit your gallery to see more great pieces like this one.
Take care and thanks for letting me and the world see your great talent.

PS I found this at someone else's site and i jsut had to have it. This is one of the ways i do get around here.

I think i added you to my friends list so i can get into your gallery after I get done with all the comments i am dealing with on a huge up load of my own work.
You take care and just keep getting better. I want to watch you make it to the big times and you have everythig it takes.

*sigh* Oh, the setups you can create and leave alone while finishing pieces they're for, when your studio isn't in your living room.
Thanks for sharing this, Armin. Don't worry, I am extremely grateful for all the blessings I've been given; including family, our home, and my studio and time in which to use it.
