Pencil on hot press water color paper
30” x 22”

Although tightly observed shards of three broken light bulbs scattered on a metal ring, the whole composition and focus of this drawing is a nod to my love of abstraction. Even the category I am submitting in is abstraction although it’s a still-life as well.

Two of the bulbs had a white powder in them, when they shatter the white powder scratches off in strange and wonderful patterns. One of the bulbs was clear; it was quite a test to draw the complex transparencies of hundreds of shards with their distortion and complex values. My main challenge was dealing with the extreme low angle of light and shadow. I set this up on the floor of my studio and worked from a combination of photos and the real pieces of glass. It certainly took much longer then expected but what else is new. Now it’s off to a rare commission…

Thanks for looking

That is stunning. Your eye for detail and tonal variation is truly remarkable.

Amazing, the level of detail is actually quite hard to believe. I'm particularly impressed with the bottom-metal bits of the bulbs. Well done.

I really, really love this. The light and the irregular shape of the pieces do make it look abstract, fascinating how that works. The detail I like the most is the top of the clear bulb.

As always your work is very well done... On this piece especially I enjoy the subject matter. Your use of 'circles' reminds me of Mandalas in some ways, and I have noticed it in several pieces of yours. "Mandalas, that seem to think out side the box," is how i think of them. I am curious if you studied that art form, or if the circles you use are purely for aesthetic reasons.
In either case, I enjoy this piece very much and have likewise added it to my favorites.

I never studied Mandalas in depth but I enjoy looking at them. Circles are both organic and geometric, I love them as a symbol of continuum.

absolutely fabulous.. the composition is awesome, contrasts and shading just perfect
(not that I have ever seen anything else than perfect from you )

I think I love the metal strings most of all - you can almost feel them vibrating still

Wonderful work

Sometimes the simplest things can be the most complex. I love it when an artist can do such amzing work with such mundane subjects...wakes up my sleeping eyes.

Armin, you know I love your work, so I won't go into that again for fear of sounding like a broken record. However the concept of this piece is one that makes me think. It demands that I look at it without breaking gaze and just THINK. The symbolism, the concept, the composition. The abstraction in realism. It all makes me think. No words can truly express what I think when I look at this because the emotion is deeper than words. You've once again drawn another piece that is true art and not just another drawing.

You've done something with your work that all artists long to achieve - having their artwork be more than a pretty picture but a piece that changes the way people think. It has an EFFECT like ripples on water with only one drop. Your work reaches past the eyes and into the soul.....

This is awesome. I really enjoy your view of the world, and your language. It's such a pleasure to wander around the drawing and see what there is to see. As much as, and as different as, the first emotional impression that comes upon first view. I learn something new with each piece of yours I see.

Thanks so much for sharing this!

You wouldn't happen to be unhappy enough with this drawing that you could just drop in it the mail to me so you wouldn't have to look at it anymore, would you?

No?

I guess I'll just have to spend 20 years and get good enough to do one myself.
