Description
Shadow Play II Graphite on Illustration board 39” x 19”Another broken bulb drawing? Well yes and no, with the exception of one my bulb drawings the others are very narrative where the light bulbs take on symbolic importance of the fragileness of being human. Not with this one, this is the second in a series of works called “Shadow Play”, the composition and the overlapping of glass becomes somewhat abstract; piles of shards laying on top of each other are of interest to me for the intangible forms suggested and the focus is mainly on the shadows and defused patterns of light.
I would like to eventually create five of the Shadow Play drawing each one with a different subject but very similar composition.
Thanks you for looking

I don't know about the rest of the world but here in Europe those kind of light bulbs will not be sold anymore in the near future. They are replaced by energy-saving light bulbs. Those are pretty ugly and would not make an artistically picture, but they contain quicksilver, so it would not be a good idea to shatter them anyway.
Next generations who see your lightbulb drawing will wonder what it is.
I like the idea in your drawing that the shattered bulbs give shadows instead of light.
Wonderful composition.
Cheers

Thanks Dirk, here as well these are going to be gone soon, I think I have used them all, LOL. Your right the new ones would look kind of stupid. I’m not sure how many more drawings well have light bulbs in them anyway once I said what there is to say that’s it. My best to my homeland my friend!

Your bulbs look great even when devoid of any metaphysical consideration. It's just a different trip.
And I see you're back with this "insignificance" theme, am I right? That's what I thought you were refering to by the attention you paid to the piles of shards (...or maybe I'm just tripping myself, never mind).
So we take this as the first of your forthcoming "Shadow Play" serie... What will be next, I can hardly wait. The content of an astray would be fun! (just kidding) Or why not something with a metallic/chrome reflection, like drops of mercury for example? That would be both beautiful and challenging!

Oh my! I love the play with the shadows and broken glass, they make a very interesting composition. How the reality of an object can become an abstract is very interesting and intriguing to me. This is a really great example of it! Most excellent piece of work!
