Leave it to Denis to say what I was thinking. Life has been a bit heavy duty for a bit which causes me to have a more visceral reaction to this than I might have otherwise.

I know I was having difficulty forcing my thoughts into the constraints of words when I commented on your journal about this work. I am having a similar difficulty now, but I hope my meaning comes through. Some experiences are just too big for words.

Your range of gray is perfect. I think that is what makes your work so life like. I can absolutely see where the piece is going. I have visited the Jewish Memorial in Berlin, Germany and it has an effect similar to the roots in your picture in a different media of course. Impressive work. I can only hope to one day refine my skills to your level. Take care.

Thanks Andrew, I hand an uncle who helped Jews escape Germany in WWII and was hanged by the Nazis, being German I have had a lot of guilt, although I wasn’t even alive yet, still I have a hard time with it.

You are very welcome. I am stationed (however deployed right now) in Germany. I see that you have shown in Illinois quite a few times in the past. Maybe I will get to catch one of your showings some time.

Take care,

I hope that the solo show becomes a springboard for strong public reaction to the underlying meaning and future implications of the imagery in this epic drawing.

There is something here for everyone, and on a variety of different levels. It is a veritable song of the dead who live and an indictment of the living who are dead.

Wonderful piece of work.

Great job, the symbolism you use is very deep. I hadn't noticed the difference on the eyes, how one looks at you and the otherone beyond you.

We humans see death, where crow sees life.

Back to the roots, the basis of mind stripped bare - only what truly maters and nothing more. It is in this state, that life, in all it's complexity, suddenly becomes extremely simplified to my mind. Though one can not deny the severity of the prune (levelling), I quite agree with mollygrue's take on the roots, being one with a green thumb, I'd have to say I sense life. Unknown species, newness, possibilities, but this lies beyond the 'at once' foreboding central triptych. The middle of two extremes, one eye over focussed, the other to distant, and yet to my thinking, this is the one being without reconciliation. The one being, divided by skulls of the many, watch over by the feathered witness who saw death become life.

I die and I die and I die. And in the crows eye?

Ultimately, self forgiveness is the hardest reconcile.

Self identification (nation) with this divided state of mind, could quite easily lead people into the historic and contemporary atrocities that you speak of. This division addressed, who knows. It is quite disturbing to realise that to some people, death is the answer to complex problems, that they themselves project with their own minds onto and into life. WMD?

Masterful execution Sir disturbing and richly rewarding.

Gotta keep a closer eye on you, old man. Seems I missed some interesting debate. Next time I see you get wound up, expect ellen with his neck. But here, I'm late... let me just say, technically precise and amazing as per usual... I'm thinking some of your subtlety is too subtle, the eyes, for instance, and the separate factions enhance disjointedness rather than celebrate a perplexing whole.

Old man? Your right behind me my friend…..

Yup and that’s your perception and your truth. By being too subtle, if I was an illustrator I would have missed the mark but as a fine artist this same subtleness gives this drawing a much wider berth. Normally I would say nothing about what sparked an idea and it’s totally up to the viewer to interpret this with their own criteria. For some it seems very easy yet quite different then my truths and for others it seems very frustrating. In a way this tells me it’s at the correct narrative level.
Thanks for your words

Excellent work Armin. I had the privilege to see this drawing while you were still working on it, and it has turned out exceedingly well. From what I've seen of your work, I know that it is much more impressive when you are actually standing in front of it. I hope that someday I can have that honor again.

I only hope that I will one day be half as good an artist as you are today.

I knew it'd be great technically, because that's what you do...but there's always something more to it when you do pieces like this....something I haven't been able to bring into my work yet. I just can't seem to delve into myself and find it, I've tried but there's something stopping me....hopefully it'll come, I'll keep trying...you're a great encouragement to persevere.

Have you always had a good handle on interpreting your inner thoughts and emotions and have been able to build on that or did you have to learn where to find them and how to understand them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

1nimra In reply to RTyson [2007-10-08 18:39:34 +0000 UTC]

Ruth, once I got to the point that I could draw reasonably well, drawing just a reproduction of a photo wasn’t enough anymore. Not that I couldn’t learn to draw better but doing it hand in hand with an interesting concept is much more rewarding, thank you so much.

A very striking and thought-provoking piece. As always, exceptionally well-executed. I'd expect no less!

It's very interesting, and for all that is new in it, though, it feels familiar... almost repetitive.

I read your discussion, and all those feelings, emotions, intents and purposes. A lot to put into one image. Maybe too much? I don't know. I know -I- couldn't possibly encompass such breadth!

I have to say, it's not my favorite. Something about it doesn't draw me in to look more, as many of your other compositions do. It's unsettling. Disconcerting. But not in a way that pulls me in to want to think about it, and explore it. Rather, the fractured images annoy a bit. Akin to scratching a chalkboard with one's fingernails. It gets a reaction: but my response is to pull away.

Perhaps I will look at this again, but not likely.

You've certainly achieved your goal though: "a drawing like this should not however dictate but start a process of investigation by the viewer"

Bravo!

Ok ill try that again without all the typos

Thank you for your frankness, I appreciate that. The light bulb pieces are less direct and give more room for interpretation, this one I must say is quite severe and symbolically more universal. Skulls in themselves are very limiting in symbolism. That it pulls you away of course isn’t good, not good for the piece. Yet I understand and expect that to some extent with this one, that its like “scratching a blackboard” though is natural, with what its about it shouldn’t be an easy thing to look at…. damn it ill never sell this one! LOL

CaffeinatedBrew In reply to 1nimra [2007-10-02 01:09:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm not certain it's the skulls that are causing the discomfort!

I think it's more that when you have two opposing eyes... looking in different directions... disassociated from a face, but then place a crow and skulls as the nose (can't really help interpreting them in that context given the eyes), that there is a repulsive quality to the collection....

The roots as people... I like that. I want to see more. But the boxes around the other elements... I just can't articulate the feeling... I imagine that I want to see a softer transition, rather than as three pictures hung on a wall that has a mural on it?

You've confounded me Armin! I'm having a difficult time with this...

And of course, this is exactly what you've intended. Damn you!
