Description The new title is “The Waking Edge”

Graphite on Illustration Board 39” x 31”

This work is of the precise point when conscience is awakened, the experience of sudden reality. It happens when we first wake and it happens suddenly, unexpectedly in life’s journey. Nothing here is precise to anyone except to myself. It’s personal in its symbolism yet there are universal symbols as well. The background is drawn more for the “feel” it gives the overall drawing, industrial, decomposing almost contradictory to what Jessica looks like yet her sudden frozen stare brings a different reality to the work one of angst. Symbols such as a metal halo, the meeting of circles forming a vesica, bones, stones and even her attire are important icons in this story. Yet to explain these would gives too much away. Since it’s a teaching forum I tell much more then I feel comfortable with, but it gives an indication to my process, the only true hint would normally be the title, “The Waking Edge”

Like much of my work there’re are people who I connect with; it opens up their imaginations by adding their personal insights, yet some will see nothing but the negative and transpose every clue. As always, what the viewer sees in this work is the truth for that individual and I find that much more interesting in the long run.

I have to say, that I was waiting for the moment you will finish this picture, and as I thought, it is really, really fantastic job. I love the background - it reminds me cosmic space impressed in metal, sort of very old fossil or ancient art, very subtle and slightly disappearing in light and darkness. Were you looking at something while drawing this part?

But there is something else in your picture I like the most - something that attracted my eyes immediately - the sweater, and especially part on arm, beneath her hair, with smooth lights in shadows and very delicate and extremely precise details. It is very hard for me to draw materials. I wish I could have so much patience as you...

Thank you so much, the background was mostly constructed from abstract sketches from my sketch book although I do have bits and pieces of old walls in my studio.

Denis-Peterson In reply to ??? [2008-02-13 00:06:50 +0000 UTC]

Normally, works of art as competently well rendered as this one are described by referring to the known, albeit complex elements of composition, i.e. textural surface tonal balancing, multiple depths of field, shading in perspective, etc.

However, here the work itself speaks volumes about the nature of some of those elements; and very specifically how they can be composed to successfully work together in unison. It is akin to hearing the debut of a stirring symphony and marveling in the composer's deft use of a musical vocabulary that s/he has actually created within the work; one which at once lends credibility to the work, its creative invention, and compositional elements validated through the existence of the work itself.

So, aside from again delivering another compelling personal visual statement, the strength of this piece lies not only in its appealing likeness or accomplished portraiture, but in the recognizable identity of your unique style and uncompromising approach.

That’s great timing Denis in the last few weeks I have been reading quite a bit about your work, you are indeed one of the best Hyperrealists working today. And I take great pride in your comment my friend. Thank you!

Your drawings always have that appeal that others usually lack. They immediately come across as a well thought out piece of art with a very deeply rooted message. I have utmost respected for you and your craft is truly remarkable. You are a genuine source of inspiration for me as I know you are for many others out there.

Cheers,

Steph

I appreciate the good words Steph; I have focused on my work to go beyond just tight renderings. Instinctively I know that this type of drawing can just be eye candy and nothing more, no lasing appeal therefore a strong concept is very impotent, and that’s my goal.

Not much, I did use an eraser to lighten areas, I will use anything to leave the right mark, an easer is a great tool for certain things, it can also kill the overall look, it about balance…

Thank you

Daisy, Your drawing is coming along very nicely! Hair? I draw from back to front dark to light, I don’t erase I lightly indicate it and give it structure rendering some stands but not overdoing it, it takes time. Thanks for the good words!
