Description The new title is “The Waking Edge”

Graphite on Illustration Board 39” x 31”

This work is of the precise point when conscience is awakened, the experience of sudden reality. It happens when we first wake and it happens suddenly, unexpectedly in life’s journey. Nothing here is precise to anyone except to myself. It’s personal in its symbolism yet there are universal symbols as well. The background is drawn more for the “feel” it gives the overall drawing, industrial, decomposing almost contradictory to what Jessica looks like yet her sudden frozen stare brings a different reality to the work one of angst. Symbols such as a metal halo, the meeting of circles forming a vesica, bones, stones and even her attire are important icons in this story. Yet to explain these would gives too much away. Since it’s a teaching forum I tell much more then I feel comfortable with, but it gives an indication to my process, the only true hint would normally be the title, “The Waking Edge”

Like much of my work there’re are people who I connect with; it opens up their imaginations by adding their personal insights, yet some will see nothing but the negative and transpose every clue. As always, what the viewer sees in this work is the truth for that individual and I find that much more interesting in the long run.

Wow wonderful, I love all the detail on her and the huge sense of realism.. its like I could just play with her hair at any time...
Also I love the background because it reminds me of gears and artifacts within a wall, which reminds me of fantasy which I adore. +fav

Gareth, It’s the background that satisfies my love of “Steam Punk” yet I don’t want to get that direct with it, thank you

The detail in this, especially in her sweater and necklace, makes this look like a photo. There's something even deeper and more realistic than a photo, can't explain it. Your works never cease to blow my mind, and inspire me to keep drawing. Wow.

Thanks you JS, it’s the very statement that’s explains what I am after I’m not sure if it beyond photography is what I try for but an alternative that only a drawing can capture.

I wish I could see it in real life. I don't know if it's just the piece itself, or the fact that I recently got to see some Rembrandt paintings in real life, but the lighting in this piece seems as though it is greatly significant, but being on a computer (especially a laptop) I find it impossible to tell how dark or light it should look

I have watched, and not commented through each WIP. I also have returned in between your posts, and stared at lengths. I think I have viewed this piece more than any other that you have done. Which was odd to me at first because something about it struck me poorly. Obviously your work is amazing, but this one for some reason AT FIRST, just did not speak to me, and yet I could not look away.

When I had begun drawing when I was very young ( I am not that old now), my original hope was that within everything that I drew I wanted a emotional response.

And so I captured emotion within each piece I did. As such my work tells emotional stories, within the subtleties.

I suppose what I am trying to say here is that I saw subtleties, so deep that I myself at first could not recognise them for what they were.

This has now become one of my favorites, because it invoked emotion. An emotional response, good, bad or indifferent, is the final great achievement, for each piece of art of any media.

Thanbk you for re-showing me the goal.

I think this is one of my favorite pictures of yours. I love it! it's haunting. And I have to say that I often don't connect completely to your pictures, probably because I look for a gut emotional reaction in a peice and the complexities of human expression. You seem to concentrate more on symbolism and detail to say what you have to say, and while that is a valid and interesting form of expression, it never really works for me on an emotional level, only on an intellectual one. This peice, though, captured me emotionally as well as intellectually. Something about the eyes, and the expression, made the girl seem very human. And your typical symbols in the background made it interesting to study, looking for clues.
I hope I didn't come across as conceited, or an art basher, or anything. I admire your work greatly. I just wanted to let you know how amazed I am that you covered two different territories in this picture - the symbolic and the emotional. Most artists can only do one or the other. I'm pretty sure you're more interested in the symbolic, judging from the rest of your work. But I don't think it can be bad news to you that you covered two grounds in this picture.
Anyway, I love this peice, and I hope I didn't come across as insulting. I just wanted to let you know how moved I was by this pictures.

Thank you and your right Ilana I do indulge in symbolism but there are undercurrents of any emotions that I am feeling about the subject matter or even as slight as what I am feeling at the time. I’m glad you like it.

Very nice shaded and detailed.
I have few questions. How to do hair thin lines (highlited). It is only with kneaded eraser or with other technique?
Other question would be about saving graphite drawings protection. I heard about hair spray fixative. Do you use it?

Thanks

1nimra In reply to JK89 [2008-01-09 18:59:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you Justin

I don’t erase the hair out it never works without smudging and marking the fibers of the paper, I just draw around the white hairs and then shade them. I do spray my work after a week or two, with workable fixative.
